Rushing through the lobby, with tears stinging her eyes and pride fallen to a new low, Cassidy wasn’t sure if she’d ever be able to pick her spirits up or show her face in this building again. For that matter, she wanted to run and hide from the whole of Seattle…even move out of the state.

When the sullen-faced guard called her name, she turned to find a disgusted expression that let her know he didn’t appreciate having to address her, “Miss Fearn, Mr. Bertram would like you to wait.”
Against her better judgment, her embarrassment turned to hope as she squeaked, “What?”
Slipping back into his bored expression, the guard said, “He said he’d like for you to wait in his office.”
She recognized that, to do this, would be to give in (yet again) to Alfie but she was too emotionally exhausted to care at this point. Turning on her heel while feeling as if she’d plunged down the steep incline of a roller coaster, she turned back and retraced her steps. Feeling despondent, she removed her heels in the elevator. She focused on the cool floor to avoid wallowing in her mental agony.
She rediscovered the room she’d mistaken for his office by the line of suited men filing out the door. They all had the good grace to commence their conversations and blatantly ignore her presence. Now that she wasn’t blinded with anger, she realized the two rooms only vaguely resembled each other. Alfie’s office was a double door constructed of a bleached red wood or possibly red oak.
Without reticence or anger, his voice projected through the hall, “Come into my office, Miss Fearn.”
Bolder than normal, she sauntered through the doors with a confidence brought about by the memory of his discarded contract which still graced his bed. Stepping inside, she discovered darkness with the blinds closed. Squinting, she vaguely remembered removing her shoes in the elevator until one heel brushed her palm before they fell from her fingers to land with a solid thump.
She was next to follow, squeaking in surprise when her back hit the floor as he said through clenched teeth, “You naughty girl.”
The scents of candle wax and heated sex drifted over her senses, sending a shiver down her spine as his erection throbbed solidly against her thigh. Suddenly and selfishly wanting to own every inch of him, her mind flooded with fantasies of watching him shake apart as he’d done to her the previous night.

“ Haven’t you learned yet to trust me and do as you’re told?” His teeth sharply nipped her earlobe. “Oh, Cassidy, you’re begging for punishment. Do you realize that? You’re pushing me, aren’t you? When I asked if you wanted to stay, you said yes. I specifically told you that I would control and you would trust me. You said you trusted me.”
