something or suggest they call Colt and Melissa to come back and do more planning, now that this subject was settled.
Tori leaned forward, bracing her elbows on her crossed legs. âIf you donât want to come, then Iâll go alone.â
Kate almost fell off the bed in shock. Sheâd never seen Tori act like this before, and she couldnât believe how firm her friendâs voice was, or how determined her face appeared. âSeriously? You want to go back there, and youâd go alone if I donât come? Why?â
âIâm not sure.â Tori tapped her chest. âBut I feel it in here. Like God is telling me itâs the right thing to do. That weâre supposed to help her somehow. I donât know any more than that. But I wonât be mad if you donât want to come. I understand.â
Kate sat up straight. âNo way will I let you go alone.â She shuddered. âThat old woman could shoot you and bury you behind the house, and no one would ever know. Youâre my best friend, and if I canât talk you out of it, then Iâm going with you.â
A smile lit Toriâs face, and her eyes sparkled. âYouâd do that for me?â
Kate didnât hesitate. âYou bet. Youâve always backed me up, and Iâll do the same for you. Thatâs what friends are for, right?â
Tori beamed. âRight. Iâve never had that kind of a friend before you came along, thatâs all.â
âSo whatâs your plan?â
Toriâs smile faded. âIâm not sure. I hadnât thought that far.â
âAnd what do we tell Colt and Melissa?â
Tori shook her head. âNothing. I donât want anyone else involved. We have to do this alone, Kate.â
âO-kay â¦â Kate didnât like it, but Tori was the boss on this one. If she didnât go along with her friend, Tori might decide to do it alone, and that wasnât an option. âBut we need some kind of plan. We canât just walk up to the house again. Sheâll chase us off like last time.â
âI agree.â They were quiet for a minute before Tori spoke again. âWe could bake cookies or brownies or something and take them to her as an apology for upsetting her today.â
Kate nodded. âI suppose. Iâm not crazy about cutting through the woods again, though. I sure wish we knew if there was another way in.â
âI saw a driveway on the far side of the paddock where the horse was.â
âSeriously? Man, I didnât notice anything other than that rifle.â Kate stared at her friend in awe.
âI donât know where it comes out, so I suppose weâll have to go in the same way.â Toriâs shoulders drooped. âI wish weâd stayed longer and tried to talk to her.â
Kate raised her brows. âUh ⦠she told us to leave. I donât think that was a good time to try to talk.â
âI know. So, what do you think about taking cookies?â
âSure. Mom wonât care if we bake a batch. Are we going to tell our parents?â
Tori worried her lip again. âCould we tell them weâre taking cookies to an old lady whoâs lonely, and not tell them the rest?â
Kate hesitated. They wouldnât be telling a lie, but they wouldnât be telling the entire truth either. âIâm not sure. I guess we can try that, but if my mom or your mom asks any questions, weâll have to tell them more. Do you care if we tell them weâre taking the cookies to the Mystery Rider, but we donât know her name?â
Tori smiled. âThatâs a great idea. Weâll tell them we found her house and want to do something nice for her. I donât think theyâll object to that.â
Kate nodded, but it still didnât feel right. She wasnât sure Mom and Dad would approve if they knew everything, but she couldnât take the chance that
