from frightening her away, the pressure of his arousal incited and encouraged her own. Her own hunger, unsatisfied for so long and now awakened, was ravenous. She deepened the kiss, couldnât stop herself, needed it, needed him!
And then quite suddenly, Nathan wrenched himself away.
Carin stared at him, stunned, the night breeze cold on her burning flesh.
âThere,â he said raggedly, âIâd say that pretty much proves it.â His breathing came quick and harsh. The skin over his cheekbones was flushed and taut.
Dazed, Carin shook her head. âProves what?â She ached, abandoned and bereft.
âI said you wanted me once, Carin. You still do. Weâll start from there.â
Â
âSo,â the gruff voice on his cell phone said the minute Nathan answered it. âWhenâs the wedding?â
âDad?â
Douglas Wolfe was the last person Nathan expected to hear when heâd grabbed the phone off the bedside table. And yet, the moment he heard his fatherâs unmistakable baritone, he didnât know why he was surprised.
Just because the old man had never rung him on his cell phone beforeâand as far as Nathan had known, didnât even have his numberâdidnât mean that Douglas wouldnât have it and use it when he chose to.
âOf course itâs me. Who were you expecting?â Douglas gave a huff of impatient indignation. âSo, did you set the date?â
How his father even knew heâd proposed was a mystery to Nathan. But Douglas Wolfe hadnât run an internationally respected company for thirty years by being unaware. He had tentacles everywhere.
âThe old manâs an octopus,â Dominic had once said, a note of respect and awe in his voice.
Nathan hadnât given a damn then about his fatherâs far-reaching tentacles; theyâd had nothing to do with him. Now they did. He raked a hand through his hair, wondering if the old man had the house bugged or if he could just read minds.
If so, he ought to try reading Carinâs.
âNo,â Nathan said flatly. âWe didnât set a date.â
âWhy the hell not? You dallied around a whole year just getting down there.â
âI had obligations.â
âYou have a daughter!â
âI know that,â Nathan said roughly. âAnd I didnât want to come and have to leave again right away. I took care of my responsibilities elsewhere, and now Iâm here. I spent this evening with my daughter.â
âAh, you met her? Isnât she a peach?â Douglasâs whole tone changed, and Nathan could hear his fatherâs obvious delight. âPretty as a picture. Reminds me of your mother.â
There was just a hint of wistfulness in his fatherâs tone as the older man recalled Nathanâs mother who had been the love of his life. âBeth would have loved her,â Douglas said. âSheâs smart as a whip, too, that girl. Got a good head on her shoulders. Polite, too. Wrote me a thank-you letter after I, er, stopped to see her in the spring.â He said that rather quickly, as if he wasnât sure he ought to be admitting to having visited his granddaughter.
âShe showed me the camera you gave her,â Nathan said so his father would know he was aware of the visit. âThanks.â
âMade sense to give her one,â Douglas said briskly. âShe was interested.â
âSheâs taken some pretty nice shots.â
âFigured she might. Reckon she comes by it naturally, what with you being a photographer and her mother an artist.â Douglas paused again. âThat Carinâs got talent.â
âYes.â
Douglas waited for him to amplify. He didnât.
Finally, impatiently, Douglas demanded, âSo when are you going to set the date? Dominic will need to know in order to set aside some time, and Rhys will have to apply for leave.â
âSorry. Canât
