again. âSo who is yours going to be?â
âI donât know. I just moved back here.â
âAnd you, Zara?â
Zara shrugged. âI just moved here, too.â
Ashley arched an eyebrow at Mallory. Mallory arched one back. âTotal disaster,â Ashley said.
Brandi Lyn smiled. âOh, Iâm sure it will be fine. Zara and Jane are so lovely. Theyâll find cute boys soon enough. Anyway, JoeJoeâs gonna die when I ask him to be my dandy.â
âIs that the guy who leapt off the balcony for you at the civic center?â I asked.
âIsnât that the most romantic thing in the world?â Brandi Lyn cooed. âHe just adores the whole Civil War thing.â She turned to Ashley. âDo you think he can wear his Confederate uniform to events?â
Ashley rolled her eyes. âNo, Brandi Lyn. Itâs either morning suits or casual wear, depending on the occasion.â
âAnd you, Ashley?â Engaging others in conversation, thatâs sweet. Look how sweet Iâm being, I thought. âWho is your dandy?â
Ashley straightened up proudly. âMy boyfriend, James Hardison the third.â
âOoh. A third. How exciting!â Did I deserve an award or what?
âOur fathers are partners in Hardison and LaFleur.â
âWhat a match made in heaven.â
âIsnât it? And I feel so sorry for yâall,â said Ashley. âNot having a steady boyfriend you can depend on to be your dandy. Or even knowing any of our Bienville boys.â
âThanks, Ashley,â I replied. âIâm sure weâll figure it out. Hey, Mallory, whoâs your dreamboat?â
Mallory blushed. âI havenât decided yet.â
Ashley got a conniving look on her face. âMallory has more of a free-form attitude toward boyfriends.â
Mallory blushed even more. âAshley! That makes me sound like a⦠slut .â
âIf the shoe fits.â
âYâall donât listen to her! I canât help it. I like boys. I just have a hard time making a decision.â
âYou mean you havenât met a boy you didnât like yet.â
âThatâs okay, Mallory,â I said. âWhatâs wrong with being a slut?â Okay, I was trying to be sweetâ¦. That one just didnât come out right. Thank God Mizz Upton and Walter Murray Hill chose that moment to come in from the kitchen.
âAll right, yâall!â Mizz Upton called, a big smile on her face, her omnipresent blown-out bob bobbing every time she nodded. She motioned a maidânot the Magnolia kindâto set a heavily loaded tray onto the coffee table. âWe have sweet tea, cream cheese and olive sandwiches, and lemon squares! Help yourselves. But not too much! You donât want to be bloated for your first dress measurements.â
Walter Murray Hill chuckled. âOh, Iâm sure we wonât have any bloating. This is the best-looking group of girls in town.â
Mizz Upton dismissed the non-Magnolia maid and glanced around the room, finding something amiss. âCaroline! Weâre starting, Caroline!â
Moments later, Caroline trudged down the stairs from the second floor, book in hand. âExcuse me, Mother, but do I really need to attend? I already know all this stuff from the other years.â
âWell, you need to bond with your sister Maids, donât you, honey?â
âIâm the alternate, Mother. Iâm not that important.â
Mizz Upton looked like her patience was being sorely tested. âSomething might come up where you will be called upon to serve the Court and if that ever happens you need to be prepared to serve well, sweetie. So do sit down. Please.â The last few words probably would sound polite on paper, but trust me, said out loud, they were nails hammered into a coffin.
I felt so bad for her, I said, âYeah, come join us. Have a lemon
