new interments had to be outside the city lineâ¦but there are crypts and vaults in the oldest churches,as well. Most likely new vampires would find rest in a cemeteryâI donât think theyâd be able to endure the burn of trying to sleep within an actual house of worship.â
âMy bet is on Prospect Hill,â Cody said. âIt is all hallowed ground, but many who would have been buried there perished on battlefields far away, and their remains were never returned.â
âThough Prospect Hill is German-American,â Cole noted, âI remembered reading a small article on it the day it was consecrated.â
âYes, but many bought plots there,â Megan said.
Cody stood and looked at them with determination. âWeâll flag down a carriage,â he said. âItâs not walking distance.â He was thoughtful and then shook his head wearily. âOak Hill is possible, tooâits natural landscape lends itself to many places where a vampire might find enclosures in which to rest.â
âAnd if one of the older, seasoned vampires survived, he might have a place already set up⦠anywhere, â Megan said.
âWeâll just keep searching. Weâll start with Prospect Hill, move on to Oak Hillâ¦and go from there.â
Cole nodded in agreement. âThe surviving attackers must be found, but we also must get into the hospital morgue where the remains of the deceased were taken. Quickly. I donât want to wait for nightfallâbetter that we handle the situation now.â
âAll right,â Cody began. âBrendan will come with me. Weâll start on the cemeteries. You can bring Meganââ
âWhat? Oh, no,â Cole said.
âYou know, cowboy,â Megan said, irritated, âone day, youâll be grateful to have me at your side, when yourweakness is shown to be great next to those you choose to pursue.â
âI know my business. You ask your brother. I learned to hold my own the hard way,â Cole said. âWhy, I nearly killed you last night.â
âOh, no, you did not,â Megan corrected him. âI could have killed you, but instead, I saved your skin. You were with Cody. And then I offered you my services.â
âYou were at my mercy,â Cole said softly.
âIââ
âAll right, stop!â Cody said. âCole, you come with me, and Iâll send Megan and Brendanââ
âNo! I know sheâs technically on our side, but youâre not going to risk Brendan going with her,â Cole said.
âItâs early enough,â Megan said. âAnd, Cody, youâre a trained medical doctor. It will make sense if we both go to the hospital. Then, weâll go to the cemeteries together. We are talking vast tasks at each location. The hospitals are huge, andââ
âEven the morgue area will house many,â Cole interrupted quietly.
âI think, since resources are limited, the murdered family might be kept separately,â Megan concluded. âIn the morgue area, but separate from those who have died of their battle wounds, or of disease.â
âAll right. We go together. ColeâMegan is my sister,â Cody said.
âOne youâve known for less than twenty-four hours,â Cole pointed out.
Megan moved toward the door. âSheriff Granger, we need to leave. You may comeâor not. As you see fit. But I am going.â
She wasnât sure what he said; it was beneath hisbreath. She didnât think that it was good. She didnât much care.
âI need my coat,â he said. âYouâll wait.â
âIâll get Brendan and my medical bag,â Cody said.
Cole was heading to the rear, for the hooks by the kitchen door, to retrieve his railway frock coat.
It was a long coat. Megan thought that it was also probably well suppliedâwith stakes, a mallet and a number of sharp knives.
