Edna and Pearl better lay low for a while.â
âI donât think theyâre in any danger,â Rane remarked. âWeâre the only ones who know they killed the McDonalds.â
âUnless they let something slip,â Mara pointed out. âEdna never could keep a secret.â
âWhatâs the third thing?â Savanah asked.
âPearl and Edna are missing.â
âAnd thatâs a bad thing?â Logan muttered.
Rane looked at Mara. âThereâs more, isnât there?â
âIt seems those meddling old fools are very popular this week. The coalition wants them dead, but thereâs a rumor that an unknown hunter is offering a thousand credits for information on their whereabouts.â
âIâd be happy to turn them in.â
âForget it, Blackwood,â Rane said brusquely. âEdna and Pearl are like family.â
Logan shook his head. âNot to me.â He held up his hands in a gesture of surrender when Rane glared at him. âOkay, okay. You win.â
âEnough, you two,â Mara said. âWe need to find out if Pearl and Edna are in hiding, or if theyâve been captured, and if so, who has them.â
âIf the coalition found them, theyâre no longer a problem,â Logan stated. âTheyâre already dead.â
âAnd if the other hunter has them?â Savanah asked. âWhat then?â
âI donât know, but Iâd love to know why a hunter would want to take a vampire alive.â
âI can think of several reasons,â Mara said. âMaybe he wants to change sides. . . .â
Logan snorted. âYeah, right.â
âMaybe heâs looking for the cure,â Rane suggested. It wasnât well known, but Edna and Pearl had concocted some mysterious brew rumored to restore a vampireâs mortality.
âThe cure?â Savanah murmured. âWhy?â
Mara lifted one shoulder in an elegant shrug. âWho knows why mortals do what they do.â
Logan slapped his hands on his knees. âSo, do we look for them, or let âem sink or swim on their own?â
âWe ask around,â Rane said, âand see what we can find out. Right, Mara?â
She nodded, none too enthusiastically.
Sighing, Savanah murmured, âIt never rains but it pours.â
Â
Â
Near dawn, when Logan and the rest of the family were occupied elsewhere, Mara went in search of Nick. His scentâso familiar, so easy to followâled her to a deserted shack at the edge of Raneâs property.
She should have known he would be outside, waiting for her.
âYou look the same,â he remarked. âJust as beautiful as I remember.â
She smiled, pleased by the admiration in his eyes. âWhat are you up to, Nicky? Why are you here?â
âI came to see Abbey.â
âIs that the only reason?â
âDo you think Iâve got some ulterior motive?â His eyes narrowed. âRevenge, perhaps?â
âWhy are you really here, Nicky?â
âI told you. I came to see Abbey. I met her in New York a few days ago, and I wanted to see her again.â
âYou had no idea sheâs my goddaughter?â
âHow would I know that?â
âYou tell me.â
âIf I hadnât met Abbey, Iâd think it was a nice twist of fate that I found you.â
âOh?â
âIâd heard you regained your humanity. I was weary of my life, and I wanted to know how you did it. And if you couldnât tell me, I was going to ask you to destroy me.â
She hadnât expected that. The very thought of destroying him made her gasp with surprise. âThatâs why youâre here? You want me to end your life?â
âNot anymore.â
Mara regarded him for several moments. âI see. Abbeyâs given you a reason to go on.â
He nodded. âHow did you do it? How did you regain your
