perfume floated around us and I inhaled it, memories of last night flashing through my mind. I hugged her back. Suddenly I felt shy and at a loss for words.
“This is the first time I have come up here. Isn’t it breathtaking?”
I fought to gain control of myself and calm down. Just be myself. “It is. We come here most nights and this drink is amazing.” I held the glass up for her to see. “Brian is over there.” Tauni turned and scanned the crowd of people, quickly finding Brian on the lounge. She smiled and waved at him. The surprise on his face was evident and he waved back.
“I haven’t had one yet. But let’s line up.” She hooked her arm through mine and led me to the bar. I felt very self-conscious of her physical contact amid the crowd of people. Would it show that we had been lovers? Could people tell? I glanced around to see, but no seemed to pay us much mind. Although I noticed Tauni did catch the attention of a few people on the deck. I relaxed and followed her to the bar
She looked amazing. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail and hung over one shoulder. The big, overstuffed coat she wore with fur-lined collar and cuffs hid her body but the waist was pulled in tightly, accentuating her slimness. Gold hoop earrings sparkled from her ears. Black leather gloves covered her hands and her black slacks were tucked into killer high-heeled boots. My mouth went dry and I felt like a mouse next to her. She was brilliant.
“You are stunning, Kelly.”
“Huh?” I couldn’t believe such a stupid comment came out of my mouth. I told myself to snap out of it. “I was thinking the same about you.”
Tauni smiled and my stomach did a little flip when we made eye contact. “You are gorgeous. Can’t you see all the men looking at you, some of the women too?”
She was mistaken. They stared at her, not me. “Ah, I don’t think so. Take a look around, it’s you they find attractive.”
Tauni shrugged. “It is you they see, maybe me too.” She looked me square in the eye, “How about, it’s us they are looking at.” I glanced around and sure enough, we were being watched. “See?”
Did it show? Could people tell we fucked last night?
“Don’t worry.” Could she read my mind? “They are just looking at two beautiful women waiting in line at the bar. Nothing more.” Tauni leaned closer to me and whispered in my ear. Her breath was warm and sent shivers racing through me. “Relax.”
I turned to face her. She winked and smiled.
I burst out laughing. “You’re right.” My muscles relaxed and the warmth of the alcohol seeped through me, another one would give me just the right buzz. People in front of us wandered away and we moved forward. The bartender smiled at us.
I held up three fingers and turned to Tauni. “You will love this drink.”
Brian made room for us on the lounge he had acquired. Tauni sat at the end and I fit myself between Brian’s thighs and leaned back on his chest. I watched the crowd around us and my glance fell on Tauni. The frosted glass contrasted with her red lips as she sipped, and I was breathless when her tongue darted out to catch a drip of the liquid on her lip. She turned and caught me watching her. I smiled and took a drink from my own glass, trying to hide my embarrassment at being caught staring at her.
“You’re right, Kelly, this is very good.” Tauni placed her hand on my ankle when she spoke. I didn’t move my foot and I waited for something, but for what I wasn’t sure.
Brian moved and pulled me a little closer to him. “How long are you staying here?”
“Actually, tonight is my last night. I only managed to get away for a few nights.”
At Tauni’s words I felt a disappointment that surprised me. I hadn’t expected the sharp reaction to the news she would be leaving so soon. A little bit of panic darkened the edges of my vision.
“That’s too bad.”
“I know. And just when we were getting to know each other.”
