winced again. âNot that Iâm implyingâ¦Oh, hell.â
âIâm not reading into that,â he said, even though she could tell from the tone of his voice that he wasnât scared off by her innocuous comment. He knew what she meant, she thought, relieved. Sort of. âMy point is, we can talk tonight without touching on any taboo subjects.â
She felt a mischievous grin cover her face. âIs sex a taboo subject?â
There was a pause, and she felt the grin replaced by a blush. What was wrong with her? Sheâd never acted like this with any of her boyfriends, for pityâs sakes! Much less a complete stranger!
Not that much of a stranger, she reminded herselfâ¦and her pulse raced.
âNope. Sorry,â he said, and she felt herself take in a breath, even though she hadnât realized that sheâd been frozen. âAll the blood left my brain for a second. I had to lie down.â
She let out an explosive burst of nervous laughter, a stress relief. âIâm already in bed,â she said.
âReally.â His voice was rich with speculation. âWell, thatâs another coincidence. So am I.â
âSo, here we both are. In bed,â she said, wondering even as she said it where she was going with it. This was ridiculous, she knew it.
Yet she couldnât bring herself to hang up. To tell him to hang up.
âThinking of each other,â he said.
âThree thousand miles apart,â she added.
âHmm. Well, thatâs a good thing, right?â His voice was soothing, comfortable. âThat shows itâs not just physical.â
âAlthough, we are both in bed. And probably both thinking about sex with each other.â
Did she just say that?
He snorted. âThat only shows weâre not dead, honey girl.â
âI know this is dumb, but I do miss you,â she admitted, closing her eyes. âBut I donât know how thatâs possible. I donât even know you. How could I miss you?â
âYou know me better than you think,â he said. âBut Iâve got an idea. If weâre going to miss each other, we might as well get to know each other better.â
âWhatâd you have in mind?â
âTwenty questions,â he said, and she laughed in delight. âFirst offâwhat are you most scared of in the world?â
She thought about it, winced. âSnakes. You?â
âHave to say, Iâm not too fond of heights. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?â
âBen & Jerryâs Karamel Sutra,â she said promptly. âMan, I could go for a pint of that right about now.â
âMe, Iâm a huge chocolate fan,â he said, and unbidden, she got the mental picture of herself, painted with chocolateâ¦and him licking it off. âDouble dark chocolate, with hot fudge.â
She shook her head. âMy turn. Desert island questionâname three famous people you want to be stranded with, and why?â
She could hear a rustling over the cell-phone line and imagined him rolling over in his bed as he answered her questions. She kicked off her own covers, even though it was fall, and her house still held a slight chill, despite being in Southern California.
They ran the gamut for the next hourâbooks and concerts, college, childhoods. She finally yawned, glancing at the clock. âOh, man, itâs eleven-thirty. Youâre going to be exhausted tomorrow,â she said, feeling the creeping edges of guilt hit her.
âDonât worry. It was worth it,â he said with a slight yawn. âI like talking to you, Ms. Sophie Jones.â
She smiled, cradling the phone to her ear. âI like talking to you, too. We donât want to do this again, of course, but it was nice.â
âOne last question?â
âI supposeâ¦but then youâve got to get some sleep, mister.â She made her voice mock-stern, then
