Jess.
âOnly if you get caught. And Iâve never been caught,â said Ben, smiling deviously.
âWhat are you, some kind of überhacker?â Emily asked.
âHeâs a genius,â said Matt. âHe can break into anything.â
â Almost anything,â said Ben somewhat sheepishly. âCouldnât find any trace of P.E.P. Squad online. Even trying to do a reverse trace through Facebook got me nowhere.â
âAnd the hacking challenge â¦?â prompted Jess.
âOh, right. It was tough, but I managed to break into this supposed supercomputer, and all I could find on it were details about me and Matt.â
âWhat sort of stuff?â asked Emily.
âAcademic records, our business â¦â
âYouâve got your own business?â
âEver heard of BMgaming?â asked Matt.
â Racing Demons â of course! Youâre not ⦠Wow!â
âWhatâs Racing Demons ?â asked Jess.
âCome on! You must have heard of it. Itâs my favourite game of all time,â said Emily.
The three of them looked at Jess, forks poised in front of their mouths.
âWhat can I say? Iâm not a gamer,â said Jess. âWhatâs so special about it?â
âItâs the highest-selling product our company makes,â said Matt.
âItâs the highest-selling product any gaming company makes,â said Emily. âDid you guys write it?â
âWe both worked on the storyline, Matt did the graphics and I did the real programming,â said Ben.
âSounds like youâre the brains of the outfit,â said Emily. âIs he here as some sort of pet?â
âThatâs a bit harsh!â said Matt.
Jess fought back a smile. Emilyâs sense of humour was quite funny when she wasnât on the receiving end of it.
âI think heâs the one who got me in, actually,â said Ben. âMattâs held the title of Kuwaiti under-eighteen wrestling champion continuously since he was twelve. Heâs a machine in the ring.â
âIâll bet he is,â said Emily. âBut back to your hacking the supercomputer â¦â
âOh, right. Well, I must have passed the first round because Ms Pimsleur came up to us at GameCon and got us to play that gameââ
âWhat game?â asked Emily.
âThe one in the VR cell with the gunmen on the roof,â said Ben.
âDidnât you play it?â asked Jess.
âI didnât play any game. I was offered a scholarship here after I won the South African Go-Karting Constructathon for the second year running. I guess dodging bullets is the same as dodging other racers in home-made go-karts.â Emily shrugged, then flashed a grin. âPlus, Iâm really smart. But my therapist says I need to work on my interpersonal skills.â
âYou have a therapist?â said Matt.
âIf you were the only girl in a family of six older brothers, youâd need a therapist too,â said Emily, matter-of-factly.
âWhat about you, Jess?â asked Ben.
âGosh, Iâm nothing like you guys,â said Jess awkwardly. âI donât own a company or win national championships or anything. Lieutenant Parry just came to my school posing as an exam supervisor.â
âBut why did he choose you? Whatâs your special skill?â asked Emily.
âI donât know. I do OK at interschool sports, and I get top marks all the time.â
âYeah, we heard. In fact, I think the whole canteen heard,â said Matt.
âRefectory,â corrected Ben.
âWhatever.â
âWell, Iâm glad youâre here,â said Emily.
Jess was so stunned that Emily had paid her a compliment that her mouthful of lasagne tumbled back out onto her plate.
âAlthough maybe one of those Swiss finishing schools could also have been a good choice,â laughed Emily.
