players even complimented Marcus on a good workout. Maybe freedom of speech wasnât dead on this team after all.
He was toweling his hair dry after the shower when he heard the rustling of pom-poms outside the locker hut. He hoisted himself up to the transom window and peered down.
Alyssa. Every time he found himself lamenting the move from Kansas, she was his go-to thought. There was nobody like Alyssa at his old school, nobody even close. Stalin there, Alyssa hereâit was all the marketing campaign the Kennesaw Chamber of Commerce couldâve asked for.
He was about to call down to her when a figure approached. Troy.
âYouâre here late.â
âYou looked good today,â Alyssa praised him. âNice mobility in the pocket.â
Marcus felt an odd twinge of jealousy. Heâd thought he was the sole recipient of her scouting reports.
âDo you ever turn it off?â Troy asked in annoyance.
âWhat, in football season?â
He sighed. âCome on, Iâll give you a ride home.â
âThatâs okay. Iâll hang out.â
The great Troy Popovich wasnât used to being told no, even by his ex.
âYouâre waiting for him , arenât you?â
âWho?â she asked innocently.
âIâm not a moron, Lyss! Heâs the only guy left in the locker room!â
She bristled. âHe has a name, Troy. So what if Iâm going with Marcus?â
âIs this supposed to be revenge or something?â he demanded.
âNo. I like the guy. The fact that it bugs you is really just a bonus.â She shrugged. âIâm a sucker for an arm. Worked for you, remember?â
âHeâs nothing,â Troy scoffed.
âWatch him sometime,â Alyssa urged. âYou were raw at the beginning of last year, too. Marcus is the real deal.â
Apparently, Troy wasnât in the mood for a quarterback comparison. He was gone by the time Marcus dressed and dashed outside.
Alyssa wrapped Marcusâs arm around her waist and started in the direction of the school. âYouâre driving me home on your mean set of wheels.â
âWhere do you live?â
âWhy do guys have to be so practical? Itâs not the destination, itâs the journey . Although,â she added skeptically, âthe Barney-Davidson doesnât give us much room to work with.â
They walked in lockstep for a while, like a slow-motion three-legged race. Then Marcus asked, âWhy is Troy so weird about Charlie?â
She rolled her eyes. âYouâre obviously a newbie at this boyfriend-girlfriend thing. Basically, youâre supposed to be getting me all hot and bothered. So why donât you try a new topic?â
But Marcus was determined to learn the truth. âIt canât just be that Troy hates me, because Chelseaâs the same way. Whatâs up with that family?â
Alyssa was impatient. âI canât think of anybody who doesnât have issues with their parents. Donât you?â
âSure. Half the reason Iâm here is to get away from my dad. But this is different. Charlieâs not just an NFL vet, heâs awesome. If he was my father, Iâd want the whole world to know. But with those two, itâs almost like heâs a deep, dark secret.â
âYouâve got it wrong,â she told him. âTroy worships his dad.â
âAt tryouts, he nearly bit Kevinâs head off for even mentioning the guy.â
âIt wasnât always that way,â she explained. âTroy and Charlie used to be closer than closeâwatching football, talking football, playing football. I donât know what changed. Maybe this perfect-season stuff has something to do with it. Itâs a lot of anxiety for the teamâespecially Troy.â
âRight,â Marcus said sarcastically. âWhatâs a fourteen-year NFL career compared with setting a record in high
