Hazelâs eyes darted to each one of the PLDsâ faces. Her stomach gave a little flip.
âGod, Sylvia, cut the drama. Youâre going to make her nuts,â Megan said.
Sylvia shot Megan a glare before continuing. âHereâs the deal. Weâve been talking about adding another person to the PLDs. How would you feel about joining our little group?â
Hazel blinked in astonishment. Was she dreaming? This wasnât just beyond comprehension, it wasâ¦too good to be true.
âSylvia,â she began in the calmest voice she could muster. âIs this a joke?â
âWhy would we joke? Youâre smart, youâve got style and attitude, and we think youâre cool. Youâd make a perfect PLD. There will have to be a probationary period, of course.â Sylvia paused. âAnd youâll have to earn your place.â
âLike an initiation,â Megan supplied.
âIt sounds crass, but Meganâs right. It is like an initiation. We have stages.â Sylvia raised a finger. âStage one is party conduct. You passed that.â
âStage twoâprank,â Carolyn said, holding up two fingers. âShe passed that.â
âThen youâll have to do a babysitting job,â Sylvia said, âWhich is a no-brainer. I mean, who hasnât babysat by the time sheâs a junior in high school?â
âSo thatâs it?â Hazel asked. âThatâs all it takes?â
âWell, there are some other things. But youâll find out about those later.â Carolyn gave an impish grin.
âWe have a chat room and everything,â Ellen cut in excitedly. She grabbed Hazelâs hand and gave it a squeeze. âYouâll love it.â
Sylvia bit her bottom lip as if she were hesitating to deliver bad news. âYou will have to get a cell phone.â
âUm, I donât know if my parents willââ Hazel began.
âOh, donât worry about them. Iâll just buy one and you can pay me back with your share of the sitting money.â
âReally?â Hazel asked. âWow. Thanks!â
The sitting money. The parties. The status. It was all beginning to sink in.
Just days ago Hazel had been wishing for the chance to belong to a group as cool as the PLDs. Now they wanted her as one of their own.
âSo, do you think youâd like to give it a go?â Sylvia asked with mock innocence. âItâs not too horrible an idea?â
Sylvia knew Hazel would be an idiot to say no.
âOh, I suppose itâll help me pass the time,â Hazel replied, using the same nonchalant tone Sylvia used. âThat is, if I donât get too tired of all of you.â
âWell, mes amies ?â Sylvia prompted.
Megan, Carolyn, and Ellen produced little wrapped gifts, which they placed on Hazelâs lunch tray.
âWelcome, Haze,â Sylvia exclaimed. âWeâre happy to have you.â
âOh,â Hazel said, thrilled. The others smiled at her, obviously pleased.
âAllez,â Sylvia said, gesturing to the presents. âGo on. Open them.â
âThat oneâs from me,â Ellen said, pointing to a rectangular box wrapped in purple foil.
Hazel quickly unwrapped it. Inside was a miniature plastic bottle of lavender body lotion.
âThank you,â Hazel said sincerely. She uncapped the bottle and smelled the lotion. âOh, itâs nice.â
Ellen nodded. âI buy it all the time.â
Hazelâs hand ranged over the other gifts as she wondered which one to open next. She chose a purple bag, its handles tied with curly ribbons. There was something hard wrapped in white tissue paper inside. She drew it out. It was a purple candle.
âShort notice,â Carolyn said, as if apologizing for her gift.
âI love it,â Hazel assured her. She smelled it. âLavender?â
âSpring rain,â Carolyn corrected. âPurple and lavender, it
