surprise,â Aly told him. âCome with me.â
Dad followed, and Aly threaded through the crowd of people and dogs and cages back to where Brooke was standing. She was holding Sparky, who kept trying to lick her face. His rainbow collar shone.
âYou want me to meet Brooke?â Dad asked.
Aly started laughing. âNo, Dad! We want you to meet Sparky.â
âThat little guy? Is he actually a dog?â Dad was joking, but Brooke didnât like it.
âOf course heâs a dog!â she said, and handed Sparky over to her father. Dad was so much bigger than the tiny dog that Sparky fit right in the crook of his elbow. Sparky wasnât anything like Dadâs dogMouse, but when he turned his head and licked Dadâs fingers, Dad smiled.
âHeâs really sweet,â Dad said. âWas he your favorite?â
Aly nodded.
Brooke said, âWell, not at first, but at second, yeah. And now I love him the most.â
Dad looked down at Sparky. âSo is one of your friends adopting him?â he asked.
Brooke looked at Aly. Aly cleared her throat. âWe thought maybe we could adopt him,â she said.
âThere you are, girls. I thought Iâd lost you,â Mom said, walking over to Aly and Brooke. Then she saw the dog in Dadâs arms. âWhoâs that?â she asked.
âItâs Sparky,â Brooke said. âHeâs the last dog left that doesnât have a family.â
Aly handed Mom her list. âThese are all the reasons why we think heâd be the perfect dog for us,â she said.
Mom looked at the paper, then stepped closer to Dad so he could read it too. âYou girls mustâve been thinking about this for a while,â she said.
Brooke pushed her glasses up on her nose. âWe have. For a very long time. At first I wanted Melvin, but heâs really slobbery and too big, and Aly knew all along that Sparky would be the best one.â
âHe really is, Mom,â Aly added. âAnd we think heâd be a great puppy for our family.â
Mom looked down at the paper in her hand again and started reading it over carefully.
âHi, everyone,â Joan said, walking over to the Tanners. âGuess what? I just sold out of all the Joanâs Bones.â She was smiling.
âThatâs great news,â Mom said.
Brooke couldnât wait another second. âMom! We want a dog,â she said. âThe one Dadâs holding.â
Mom gave Dad and Joan a look. âIâm not sure if ourhouse can handle a dog. And heâd be home alone all day. Thatâs not a very nice way for a dog to spend his time.â
Aly hadnât thought of that. That was a problem. She didnât want Sparky to be alone all day. There had to be a way to make this work. She had to think fast.
âHow about the Sparkle Spa?â Aly said. âWhat if he lives at the Sparkle Spa during the day? We could get him a bed and toys, and he could live in the corner next to the pedicure chairs. We could even get him an enclosure gate so he wonât be able to go into the main salon and wander around.â
Mom tilted her head sideways. She raised her eyebrows at Dad. Brooke started bouncing on her toes.
âWho would walk him?â Mom said. âWhile you girls are at school?â
âUm . . . ,â Aly began.
Joan raised her hand. âI could do it,â she said.
âReally?â Brooke asked, throwing her arms around Joan. âYouâd do that?â
âSure,â Joan answered. âI love dogs. It would be fun to have one at the salon.â
Dad cleared his throat. âYou girls have been so responsible with the fund-raiser and the shelter dogs, I bet youâd do a great job with Sparky. But you know Iâm not around very much, so this decision is really up to your mom.â
âI promise weâll take such good care of him,â Aly said. âYou wonât
