watched Brian as he tried to get across the crowded room carrying the pink cat carrier with the pink bow. âBut things change, donât they, Molly? You and Joe arenât the same now as you were thirty years ago. What if Brian becomes like his parents?â
âI donât think Brian will ever be like them,â Elsie said. âHe was born a rebel, Dorothy. Heâs going to do what he wants to do, not what they want him to do.â
Dorothy smiled. âI think I need another drink to get through this.â
âOh, look!â Elsie pointed. âThereâs the food. At least we donât have to grab it as it waltzes by. Come on. Weâll all feel better after weâve eaten.â
The food was as elaborate as the rest of the party. Iâdnever seen so many large, dead animals displayed in a buffet before. There were also huge amounts of vegetables and fruit, some of them on fire as well, many artfully carved. Several ice sculptures of Brian at different ages graced the long table too.
As we were filling our plates with the help of white-gloved servants, Dorothy began shaking her wrist.
âWhatâs wrong?â I asked her. âIs the bracelet too tight?â
âNo.â She frowned at her wrist. âItâs something else. I donât knowââ
Suddenly, there was Olivia. Her ghost form had slipped out of the bracelet where sheâd hidden to get into the ball.
âOh bother.â
CHAPTER 7
âWhat are you doing here, Olivia?â Elsie demanded. âAre you trying to get us thrown out before we even have a chance to eat?â
âIâm so sorry,â Olivia said. âI just wanted to come to the birthday ball so badly. Iâve been practicing this spell to hide for a while. Well, not really a spell, since my magic is gone. Itâs more like harnessing my energy to do what I want. I know you all understand. No one wants to be left behind.â
â
Shh!
â I cautioned as they started getting louder.
âWe donât care what it is,â Elsie continued her rant but at a lower pitch. âYou have to go.â
âI canât just go,â Olivia wailed. âI managed to move some of my runes from the staff to the bracelet, which I thought would be much more attractive than Dorothy carrying around that big staff. You all look so lovely. Iâm so jealous, even though I went to Madam Tunisâs myself many times. Dorothy, you are just beautiful.â
âThanks, Mom.â Dorothy walked into a shadowed cornerof the room with Olivia following her, tethered by the magic in the bracelet. âWhy didnât you tell me? I wouldâve helped you. I felt terrible leaving you home.â
âYou are so sweet. I just didnât want to get you in trouble.â
âAnd yet here you are floating around,â Elsie said.
âWe need to get her back in the bracelet,â I interrupted. âLetâs not have to sneak out like last time and embarrass Brian. Elsie, find him. We may need his help making this bracelet work again.â
Elsie took her plate with her to find Brian. Dorothy and I stood in the corner, hoping no one would notice that we had a ghost with us.
âIâm so sorry, Molly,â Olivia said. âI thought I had the spell down perfectly. Well, not really a spellââ
âI know.
Shh
. If we can hear you speaking, so can every other witch in this room.â I glared at my old friend even though I understood how she felt. âThis is why you should have included us. We couldâve helped you and made sure what you were doing was solid.â
âI know. I know. Do you think you can get me back in the bracelet?â
âWeâll see. Now please, stop talking and keep very still.â
Brian and Elsie were finally coming toward us. They had to part the ocean of sparkling witches who stood between us, each one wanting to wish Brian a happy
