Jalila corrected. âI just canât seem to get them with any quality men. Please donât worry. Iâm not going to do anything thatâs going to embarrass the family.â
âIt may be out of your hands. Iâve heard stories of how television producers like to cut and paste things to make them look more scandalous than they really are.â
âMr. Armstrong wouldnât do that.â
âHow do you know?â she challenged.
She didnât know. âHe just didnât strike me as that kind of man.â
âNo offense, baby girl,â her father said, catching her eye. âBut if heâs part of that crazy Hollywood crowd,I wouldnât trust him any further than you can throw him.â
That was food for thought.
âPlus,â her mother continued. âHas anyone ever gone on to get married on one of those shows? Or is it just thatâa show?â
âI believe there was one.â
âOne?â Her mother laughed. âOne out of how many? Câmon, Jalila. If you like those odds then you might as well keep doing what you been doing.â
Jalilaâs spirits started to plummet.
Her father came to the rescue. âNow, Bettye. If this is something that Jalila wants to do, then I think we should support her.â
Bettye Goodwyn didnât respond.
This whole scene had Jalila feeling like a ten-year-old trying to get her parentsâ permission to go on a school field trip.
Â
By the time Jalila returned home from her parentsâ, she had all but convinced herself to back out of the television show. It wasnât like she had signed a contract or anything. How hard would it be to find another woman to take her place?
Still, it would have been fun.
Cujo barked excitedly as she entered the door.
âHey, boy,â she cooed, patting his broad side. âHave you been a good boy?â
Woof! Woof! He ran around in a tight circle.
âCâmon. Let me get you something to eat.â As she marched toward the kitchen, her mind wandered tohow she was going to tell Mr. Armstrong that she needed to back out of the show.
She scooped dog food into Cujoâs bowl and then washed her hands at the sink. The phone rang, and Jalila picked up the cordless without looking at the caller ID. âHello.â
âMs. Goodwyn?â
She stiffened at the sound of the velvety smooth voice. She knew exactly who was on the other line. âOh, hello, Mr. Armstrong.â
âPlease. My friends call me Keenan.â
âAll right, Keenan . What can I do for you?â
âWell, I hope I didnât call you at a bad time.â
âNo. No. Iâm just getting in from my parentsâ.â She folded her arms and leaned back against the sink. How was she going to do this? Just tell him.
âActually, I was just calling you to tell you that I ran everything by my business partner and sheâs on board.â
Jalila didnât know exactly what that meant.
âFirst thing tomorrow Iâm going to make some calls. Weâre going to pitch the idea to a couple of studios next week, but I just wanted to tell you that I have a positive vibe about this whole thing. Iâm sure that we can get picked up by ABC.â
Jalila tried to digest all the information he was unloading. ABC? The ABC?
âOf course, weâll be racing to make the fall schedule. Nitaraâthatâs my business partnerâsheâs going to post an open casting call in all the trade papers tomorrow. Plus, sheâll reach out to a few casting directors.â
âCasting call.â Jalila frowned. âAre you just lining up actors?â
Keenan laughed. âNo. I wouldnât curse you like that.â
She sighed in relief. âOh, thank God.â
âBeen down that road?â
âI got a T-shirt around here somewhere.â
His laughter deepened and sent a wave of delicious tingles throughout her body.
