to get me in private to talk, so talk. You’re wasting time we could be using to investigate the area for the hunters’ hideout.”
“I hardly think it’s wasting time to get to know someone you’re working with.”
Kai grunted. “You appear clever. I’m sure you already researched me before this.”
Jane sighed. “Just because I looked you up doesn’t mean I fully know you.”
“Get to the point.”
Jane walked around the table until she was a foot away from Kai. “The point is you’re still ordering me around. You need to fix that, or else.”
He raised his brows. “Or else what?”
She smiled. “Oh, I have ways of making you agree to almost anything I say.”
“I doubt that.”
Taking another step closer, Jane stood about six inches from Kai. The heat of his body, mixed with the male scent that was uniquely his, made her heart rate kick up. She was overly aware of just how male Kai Sutherland was in that second.
But he wasn’t just any male; he was a powerful dragon-shifter who was single and attracted to her.
Before she could relive the dream she had last night, when they’d both been naked, Jane took a deep breath. Focusing on her task, she whispered, “Last warning before I start using my box of tools.”
“You will fail.”
Jane lifted a hand but stopped an inch from Kai’s chest. She studied his eyes, but they were unreadable. “Let me try. If I win and get you to admit to something you probably wouldn’t admit to, then you stop giving orders. If you hold out and I lose, I’ll do whatever you say.”
His pupils flashed to slits and she wondered what Kai’s dragon was saying to him.
Then Kai leaned his face closer to hers and she could feel his breath on her lips as he murmured, “Try your hardest, human. I will win.”
For a second, Jane lost herself in the depths of Kai’s blue-green eyes. The confidence staring back at her was only part of Kai’s story.
She would bet her career that the dragonman was hiding something.
Not that she had time to think about that. Pushing aside her ever-present curiosity, Jane whispered, “It’s a deal,” before placing her hand on Kai’s chest.
Even through his shirt, Kai’s heat branded her palm. The hardness of his chest reminded her of the muscles underneath.
Lightly scraping her nails against Kai’s torso, she focused on her task. There was no bloody way she was going to allow a little thing such as attraction get in the way of winning.
Running her other hand up and down his shoulder, Kai tensed under her ministrations. With a little more prodding, she could finally put the dragonman in his place.
She moved one hand to the back of his neck. The instant her fingers made contact with his skin a little jolt shot through her body.
Kai’s eyes flashed again and Jane asked, “Are you ready to admit you want to kiss me yet?”
He grunted. “No. If this is all you have, then you’re going to lose.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Oh, baby, I’m just getting started.”
Kai opened his mouth, but Jane moved her head to the side of his neck and nuzzled his warm skin. His scent was stronger there, and Jane couldn’t resist licking his neck. The saltiness made her stomach flip. Kai tasted good.
Since the dragonman was still unmoving, Jane bit his neck where it met his shoulder at the same time as she leaned her body against his. The feel of his hard cock against her stomach made her wetter than she’d ever been in her life.
Kai growled and grabbed her arse. Pulling her flush against his body, Jane let out a squeak.
Kai’s breath was hot against her ear. “Didn’t I tell you it was dangerous to tease an unattached dragonman?”
Daring to lean back, Jane stopped breathing at the hunger in Kai’s eyes.
Then she regained her wits. She had a bet to win. “Are you sure you don’t want to kiss me?” She lowered her voice. “Don’t you want to feel my soft, warm lips as you devour my mouth with your tongue?” His eyes
