âRemember that time we drove across the Pilbara in WA? Two flat tyres. And it was hotter than this. But we made it.â
âYeah,â agreed Burt, sheepishly, âI guess youâre right.â He gave his wifeâs hand a littlesqueeze. âIâm glad Iâve got you to keep me focused.â
And thatâs when they noticed Sam peering out at them through the partly open window. Sam saw their expressions change. She could tell they were concerned about upsetting her. Well, they neednât worry , she thought. I can look after myself.
âSorry,â said Burt with a little shrug.
Sam got out of the car, determined to do something, to not be a burden. âIâll help with the gear.â She looked back in. âEm, you stay in there.â Then she slammed the door shut.
âOh, you donât have ââ began Burt, but Sam cut him off.
âItâs okay. Itâs our gear and the sooner we get the tyre changed the sooner we can go after Dad.â Sam went round to the back ofthe car and lifted up the hatchback. âIâve helped Dad change a tyre before. I know what Iâm doing.â
âActually,â said Gwen, âI could take you and your sister ahead in the Land Rover. Iâm sure Burt can change the tyre on his own. And that way you can still get to the airport not long after your dad.â
Sam started to unpack the boot. âItâs okay,â she said. âThey canât take us all in the RFDS plane anyway. Daws will go in the plane. Weâre going to have to wait at the airport ⦠until someone figures out what to do with us kids.â
âOh.â Gwen looked sideways at her husband and pointedly raised her eyebrows. He jumped forward and started helping Sam unload.
âAt least this way Iâm doing something useful,â muttered Sam.
She knew that unpacking the car and helping with the tyre would keep her mind busy â and stop her from thinking about all the things sheâd done wrong.
âHow about I ring ahead to the airport,â said Gwen. âIâll let them know whatâs happened. Otherwise your brother might worry. Then Iâll get some cold drinks from the esky.â
âThanks,â said Sam without looking up.
âI think we should stop,â Dawson blurted out.
âWhat?â Jen glanced sideways at him.
âIâve been watching,â continued Dawson. âTheyâre definitely not behind us anymore. Itâs been ages since that rise. The roadâs been flat ever since. I can see pretty far back. And theyâre not there. We need to stop.â
âI donât think we should,â said Jen. âItâs more important to get your dad to hospital.â
âBut just before you said his injuries werenât serious.â
âI didnât say that.â Jen was looking worried now. âI said it wasnât life-threatening . There is a difference. What your dad has is a serious injury and he still needs to get to a hospital as soon as possible.â
âBut what if somethingâs happened?â insisted Dawson.
âWell, how about we give them a ring,âsuggested Jen. âWeâve got a satellite phone here.â
âOh,â said Dawson. âDo you know Burtâs number?â
âNo,â said Jen. âI thought youâd have it. Or your sisterâs.â
âMy sister doesnât have a phone. And I never thought to get his number. Weâve got to stop. Itâs bad enough that Dadâs hurt. What if somethingâs happened to them?â Dawsonâs voice had risen again and he was speaking so fast his words were running together.
âCalm down, Dawson,â said Jen, her voice even and gentle. âWe need to think this through logically. Weâre not far from the airport now. It would make more sense to keep going and get your dad onto the plane, which will be ready and
