around. He was going back to the club to find them after he left us. You donât think one of them . . .â Bessâs voice trailed off.
âI donât know, but it certainly seems funny that they disappeared,â Nancy said. She toyed with the fruit on her plate. âAnd I did tell Claudia I had the necklace in my bag.â
Bess looked up in surprise. âThatâs right. When we were talking about the break-in,â she remembered. âEveryone was there, come to think of it. You said you werenât going to let the necklace out of your sight.â She frowned and added, âYou donât think Claudiaâs mixed up in this, do you?â
âMaybe not,â Nancy admitted, trying to piece together her thoughts. âIf Claudia wanted thenecklace, she could have offered to safeguard it last night and then just taken it. But she didnât do that.â
Bess nodded. âWhat about Sandro?â she asked.
âIâve been wondering about him, too,â Nancy admitted. âHe acted weird when Claudia tried to figure out when he gave her those necklaces. But on the other hand, he doesnât show much interest in jewelry. Massimoâs the one who knows about it.â
A disconsolate look came into Bessâs eyes as she took another bite of her pastry. âMassimoâs still the top suspect, isnât he?â she asked. âHe was with you when you started feeling sick. So maybe he put something in your drink and stayed with you so he could get into your bag.â
âMaybe,â Nancy agreed. âAt this point, we have to consider everyone. The only suspect we have who couldnât have drugged me is Fabio Andreotti.â
Bess crinkled her nose in distaste. âWhy does it have to be one of our friends? Maybe the thief was in the crowd at the club and overheard what you said. Maybe it was Karine!â
âI donât know,â Nancy said, taking another sip of caffè latte. âI think we would have noticed if she was lurking around.â
âA friend of Karineâs, then. Someone from that group whom we donât know.â
Nancy still wasnât convinced. âWell, I think we should find out a little more about our friends before we go after strangers.â
âHow are we going to find out?â
Stirring her coffee with her spoon, Nancy thought for a moment. âI think we should find out where Massimo lives and drop by his apartment when heâs not there. If heâs the thief, maybe the other stolen necklaces are there,â she said. âBut first I want to talk to the owner of Preziosi. Letâs call Claudia and set up our day.â
The girls returned to their pensione and used the phone by the front desk to call Preziosi. Claudia answered. âMassimo said you fainted at the club,â she said as soon as she found out who was calling. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine,â Nancy assured her. âIâm sorry we left without letting you know. Were you still there? We couldnât find you or Sandro.â
âI am sorry. We looked all over for you. Massimo said you refused to see a doctor. Are you sure? We have a very good family doctor.â
âReally, it was nothing,â Nancy repeated. She couldnât help wondering if Claudia was avoiding her question about where sheâd been. âI guess you guys just wanted to spend some time alone.â
Claudia was silent for so long that Nancy started to think she wasnât going to answer. âNot really,â she said at last. âWe had a fight.â
âWhat was it about?â Nancy asked.
After another short pause Claudia said, âHe was flirting with someone. I would rather not talk about it.â
Nancy decided to change the subject for the moment. âWell, everythingâs fine now,â she said. âListen, we want to meet Paola Rinzini. Can you arrange it?â
