shin.
Wind whistled between the attackerâs teeth. âYou son of a bitch! You lousy little bastard!â The man yanked harder on Zachâs arm.
Agony ripped through his shoulder. Zach heard a sickening rip and his muscles turned to fire.
âHelp me out, Rudy!â the tall man ordered.
From the corner of his eye, Zach noticed Sophia scoot backward on the bed. Her face was white with fear as she tried to grab the receiver that dangled from the phone.
âNo way, sister,â the shorter manâthe one called Rudy said, as he yanked the cord from the wall.
âPleaseââ she cried.
âShut up!â the thug snarled.
Zach kicked his attacker again. âLet go of me!â
âNo way, Danvers. You fucked up one time too many.â Again he wrenched Zachâs arm.
Agony jarred through his body. Zach screamed.
âYou tryinâ to kill him, Joey?â Rudy barked.
âMaybe.â Joey twisted Zach around and slammed his face with his meaty fist. Bones shattered. Pain exploded behind Zachâs eyes. Blood spurted from his nose as his knees buckled.
Rudy stared at Zachâs pulpy face for a minute, then glanced at his partner. âOh, shit! Hey, man, I donât think this is the right guy. This one, he donât look likeââ
âYouâre making a mistake!â Sophia cried, clutching the blankets around her, her lips trembling.
âI donât think so.â The big one wasnât convinced. âLetâs get this over with, Rudy! Quit screwing around!â
Panicked, Zachary struggled, throwing himself toward the door. From the corner of his eye, he saw Rudy reach into his pocket. A flash of silver glinted in the lamplight. Zachâs guts twisted with a new numbing fear. He heard a resounding click and he nearly wet his pants. A switchblade!
âOkay. Cut him,â Joey said, his foul breath warm against Zachâs head.
âNo!â Zach fought even harder, hurling his weight sideways, throwing his attacker off balance.
âI said, cut him!â Joey yelled.
Rudyâs switchblade sliced through the air.
Sophia screamed.
Zach flinched as he felt his scalp slitting open above his ear. White-hot, the pain nearly blinded him. âStop!â Blood poured from the wound, over his eyes and face.
âThis isnât the right guy,â Rudy said, wiping the blood from his weapon on his pants. âIâve seen Danversââ
âDonât matter! âSides, heâs claiminâ to be him.â
âShit!â
Blindly, Zach kicked.
âWho cares who the fuck he is,â Rudy finally agreed. The knife plunged into Zachâs shoulder. Pain shrieked through his arm. He retched. His body sagged heavily. Theyâre going to kill me. Iâm gonna die just like a lamb being slaughtered. Zach tried to fight, but he could barely move.
âHe said heâs Jason Danvers, now letâs just get it over with,â Joey said.
Jason? They thought he was Jason? âZachary.â Zach spat words and blood from behind loose teeth. He tried to break free and his knees buckled. âIâmâ¦Iâmâ¦Zachary Danvers.â
âHeâs telling you the truth!â Tears rolled down Sophiaâs white face. âHeâs not Jason! For the love of God, just leave him alone!â
âNot Jason?â Rudy repeated. âI knew it!â
âShit!â Joey let go of Zach and jerked the knife out of his shoulder. The wound burned like acid. Zach dropped to the floor, banged his head and couldnât move out of the sticky blood pooling beneath him.
âI told you he was the wrong guy. Shit, man, why donât you ever listen?â Rudy hissed. He pointed at the bed where Sophia was still huddled in fear. âYouâget some clothes on and get out of here.â
âBut the boyââ Sophia whispered.
âHeâll live,â Rudy snarled, casting a
