side of her face.
âYour little mackerel is lounging in her barrel.â
âShe is not a mackerel, sheâs a Mertain. She is a healer from the Grotto of Health on the Mertain islands. And she is not lounging. She is recharging â preparing herself so she can help any of us in case we are injured.â
Essa was taken aback by my tone. She stood.
âMaybe you would prefer to join her in her bath tub.â
âMaybe I would. At least sheâs not mad at me all the time and she never hits me with sticks.â
Essa looked at me like she had never seen me before. I stood and faced her. âAnyway, I havenât seen you for an hour or so â are you sure you havenât gotten engaged to someone in that time?â
Essa looked like she had been slapped. âYou promised you would never mention that.â
âNo I didnât.
You
told me not to mention it. I never got a chance to promise. Well, maybe Iâm tired of being bossed around by you.â
It didnât take long for the surprised Essa to kick back. âFine,â she hissed. âI hope you and your fish will be happy together.â She stomped away, leaving her firefly to flutter around confused, and then she turned. I took a step back expecting a blow. âNow that I think of it, you and your fish are perfect together â because youâre an eel.â
I tried riding with Araf the next day but he insisted on continuing his dissertation on agriculture so I dropped to the rear to have a long overdue catch-up with Tuan. Araf didnât even notice I was gone.
âCouncillor Tuan,â I said, âIâm surprised youâre still in Duir. Donât get me wrong, itâs great having you around, but shouldnât you be in the Pinelands impressing girls with your super-Pooka act?â
âGirls,â Tuan sighed, âare the reason I am here.â
âOh?â I said with my inflection going up.
âMy mother wants me to marry.â
âOh,â I said with my tone going down.
âYes, Mother wants me to marry a mousy woman from the council.â
âWhen you say mousy, Tuan, do you mean sheâs small or that she changes into a mouse?â
âBoth.â
âAnd youâre not into rodents?â
âItâs not that â¦â
âWhat is it then?â
Tuan looked around to make sure no one could overhear. âThereâs this girl in Castle Duir.â
âOh, do tell.â
âThis mustnât get back to my mother.â
âIâll be as quiet as the mouse youâre cheating on.â
Tuan snarled at me then straightened up in his saddle and said, âNever mind.â
âNo, no, Iâm sorry T. I promise I wonât make jokes. Who is she?â
âI better not say.â
âAw come on, whatâs the big secret?â
âShe is an Imp.â
âOh, and Momâs not into mixed marriages?â
âMother thinks that Pooka power as strong as mine shouldnât be diluted.â
âSo sheâs hooking you up with a mouse?â
Tuan shrugged.
âWhy donât you just tell your mother to get stuffed?â I said. âYou do realise youâre a dragon?â
Tuan laughed. âBeing one of the most powerful creatures in The Land has little sway with my mother.â
âYeah, big guy,â I said, nodding. âI guess I can relate to that.â
We made good time and got to the base of Mount Cas on the evening of the third day. As we set up a base camp, I expected Dad to make some comment like, âArenât you glad we left at dawn?â but all he gave me was that look that said it all. Where do parents learn that all-encompassing look? Is there some sort of instructional video you get when you have your first kid? Does it come with a mirror to practise in?
Gerard brought out a couple of bottles of dark red wine. It was fabulous. I wasnât worried about
