bus and she could focus on the competition. Gracie was too busy shaking hands with a giant Reeseâs Peanut Butter Cup character to bug her. Once they checked into the Hotel Hershey, there was barely any time to unpack before Toni scheduled a rehearsal.
âBut I wanna go on the chocolate factory tour!â Gracie moped. âWhy do we always have to rehearse? Itâs so boring!â
âGracie, you wanted to be part of the team,â her mom explained. âThat means being a team player. You do what everyone else does.â
âBesides,â Scarlett pointed out, âthe competition is over tonight. We can go on the factory tour tomorrow morning.â
âPromise?â Gracie pouted. âI want to buy one of those jumbo chocolate Kisses. Iâm gonna eat the whole thing.â
âIâm sure you will!â Her mom laughed. âMaybe you can save me
one
bite?â
Gracie smiled. âWell, maybe one. And one for you, too, Scoot.â
âThanks,â Scarlett said. But chocolate was the last thing on her mind. All she could think of was winning.
âLetâs go practice, Gracie,â she said, taking her sister by the hand. âDonât forget your Dance Divas jacket!â
âOh yeah!â Gracie said, pulling on the black satin jacket and admiring the gold logo on the back in a mirror. âI look cooooool!â
âThe coolest!â Scarlett said. âNow hurry . . . please!â
When they arrived for rehearsal, Bria, Liberty, and Rochelle were already there, with their ears pressed against the meeting-room wall.
âWhat are you guys doing?â Scarlett asked.
âWhat does it look like weâre doing?â said Liberty, hushing her. âWeâre eavesdropping on the competition. Those City Feet freaks are rehearsing, too.â
âTheir music is really slow and soft. Sounds like lyrical to me,â Rochelle said.
âLet me hear!â Gracie said, pushing in between them. âWhat are they saying?â
âSomething about âbagâ and âoverâ?â Bria said, straining to make out the words.
Miss Toni walked into the room. âVaganova. Itâs a Russian ballet technique. What are you girls up to?â
âCity Feet is next door, and weâre spying on them!â Gracie volunteered.
âNo, you are not.â Toni sniffed. âBecause that is bad sportsmanship.â
âBut if we knew that they were planning, we could make our routine better than theirs,âRochelle said. âWhy shouldnât we do everything we can to win?â
âBecause weâre Divas. And weâre going to win this competition on our own merits. Not by knowing someone elseâs routine. So step away from the wall and hit the floor. Now.â
Scarlett knew Miss Toni was right. But she still wished she knew what the City Feet team was planning for their group number. Was it contemporary? Jazz? Lyrical? What did their costumes look like?
âI have an idea how we can find out what theyâre planning,â Liberty whispered to Scarlett. âAre you with me?â
She nodded.
âThen bring Grace Face and meet me outside in five.â
Liberty raised her hand to get Miss Toniâs attention. âI forgot my jazz shoes upstairs. Sorry! Be right back!â she said, dashing out the door.
Miss Toni rolled her eyes. âAll right, unless there are any other interruptions, I want to take it from the topââ
âGracie needs to go to the bathroom. Iâll take her,â said Scarlett.
âNo, I donâtââ Gracie started to say, but Scarlett covered her mouth with her hand. âNow, Gracie, what did Mom say about holding it in for too long? We donât want a puddle on the floor, do we?â She dragged her little sister into the hall, winking.
âI donât have to go!â Gracie screamed once they were outside.
âI know! But
