âI wonât be here long.â
Newt muttered a threat and stormed out of the jail.
âYouâre so brave,â Mara said with a sigh.
Emmett left to make his rounds, and Mara followed Will back to his office.
âMama said supper would be ready at six, but you could come anytime before that. She says sheâs got to thank the man who saved her little girlâs honor.â
âIâll be sure to be there on time.â Will sat down at his desk, dropped the two guns into their drawer, and closed it.
âI hope you do come early,â Mara said. âThere are lots of things I want to know about you.â
âLike what?â Will asked, suddenly aware of the true nature of Maraâs expression and beginning to feel like a fly cornered by a spider.
âAre you married?â
âNo.â
âYou sweet on anybody?â
He should have answered yes to both questions, but heâd learned long ago that although telling lies might help at a given moment, in the long run they caused even more trouble.
âNo, but Iâm not the marrying type.â
âWhy? Youâre not very old.â
âIâm twenty-eight.â
âI like older men. Theyâre more mature.â
âYouâre too young for someone my age,â Will said. âYou need a husband who wonât be old when youâre still young.â
âIâm eighteen,â Mara said.
âSee, thatâs ten years. Practically a lifetime.â
Mara laughed. âYouâre funny.â
Will wasnât feeling the least bit amused. He realized that saving Mara had turned him into a hero in her eyes. From there it was only a short leap to husband material. He hadnât been avoiding the clutches of females for more than ten years to fall victim to some young woman who couldnât see reality because of the shining armor blinding her.
âYou shouldnât be thinking of marriage yet. You have years and years to enjoy having men adore you.â
Mara frowned. âMama says I should be married already. She was a mama when she was my age.â
âDo you want to be a mama?â
Mara looked besotted. âIf I can have your babies.â
Will nearly choked. âYou donât even know me. I could be a murderer, for all you know. You should marry some nice young man youâve known all your life.â
Mara frowned again. âPapa wants me to marry Van, but I used to be sweet on Carl Ellsworth.â
â
Used to be?
â
âUntil I met you.â
Now he was in for it. All he wanted to do was buy a bull. How complicated could that be? Instead, the damned bull was missing, heâd let Lloyd Severns talk him into being sheriff, and now the daughter of the richest man in town was infatuated with him and wanted to have his babies. He could barely resist the temptation to toss his badge on the desk and hop on a fast horse out of town.
âStick with Carl. Heâs a nice fella.â
âPapa says I canât marry a poor man.â
âWhat makes you think Iâm not poor?â
âYouâre buying that bull.â
âMaybe Iâm not buying it. Maybe my father is.â
âIf your father is rich, you are, too.â
Boy, did this girl have a lot to learn. âJake adopted eleven kids, then had one of his own. Even if he wanted to give me money, it wouldnât be much. Iâm probably no richer than Carl.â
âPapa said everybody knows that Jake Maxwell owns practically a whole county. He thinks youâll make a fine husband.â
âYou mentioned this to your father!â
âTo Mama, too. She canât wait to meet you. Thatâs why she wants you to come early to supper. They wonât let me marry Carl, and I donât want to marry Van, but they said I could marry you.â
