usually came in contact, was an enigma to him.
At length he relinquished his scrutiny, and drew up his chair to the table with a spirited air.
âAnd now, Mr. Markham,â he said crisply, âweâd better outline our activities so as not to duplicate our efforts. The sooner I get my men started, the better.â
Markham assented readily.
âThe investigation is entirely up to you, Sergean Iâm here to help wherever Iâm needed.â
âThatâs very kind of you, sir,â Heath returned. âBut it looks to me as though thereâd be enough work for all partiesâ¦. Suppose I get to work on running down the owner of the handbag, and send some men out scouting among Bensonâs night-life croniesâI can pick up some names from the housekeeper, and theyâll be a good starting point. And Iâll get after that Cadillac, tooâ¦. Then we ought to look into his lady friendsâI guess he had enough of âem.â
âI may get something out of the Major along that line,â supplied Markham. âHeâll tell me anything I want to know. And I can also look into Bensonâs business associates through the same channel.â
âI was going to suggest that you could do that better than I could,â Heath rejoined. âWe ought to run into something pretty quick thatâll give us a line to go on. And Iâve got an idea that when we locate the lady he took to dinner last night and brought back here, weâll know a lot more than we do now.â
âOr a lot less,â murmured Vance.
Heath looked up quickly, and grunted with an air of massive petulance.
âLet me tell you something, Mr. Vance,â he said, âsince I understand you want to learn something about these affairs: when anything goes seriously wrong in this world, itâs pretty safe to look for a woman in the case.â
âAh, yes,â smiled Vance. â
Cherchez la femme
âan aged notion. Even the Romans laboured under the superstitionâthey expressed it with

âHowever they expressed it,â retorted Heath, âthey had the right idea. And donât let âem tell you different.â
Again Markham diplomatically intervened.
âThat point will be settled very soon, I hopeâ¦. And now, Sergeant, if youâve nothing else to suggest, Iâll be getting along. I told Major Benson Iâd see him at lunch-time; and I may have some news for you by to-night.â
âRight,â assented Heath. âIâm going to stick around here for a while and see if thereâs anything I overlooked. Iâll arrange for a guard outside and also for a man inside to keep an eye on the Platz woman. Then Iâll see the reporters and let them in on the disappearing Cadillac and Mr. Vanceâs mysterious revolver in the secret drawer. I guess that ought to hold âem. If I find out anything, Iâll âphone you.â
When he had shaken hands with the District Attorney, he turned to Vance.
âGood-bye, sir,â he said pleasantly, much to my surprise, and to Markhamâs, too, I imagine. âI hope you learned something this morning.â
âYouâd be positively dumbfounded, Sergeant, at all I did learn,â Vance answered carelessly.
Again I noted the look of shrewd scrutiny in Heathâs eyes; but in a second it was gone.
âWell, Iâm glad of that,â was his perfurctory reply.
Markham, Vance and I went out, and the patrolman on duty hailed a taxicab for us.
âSo thatâs the way our lofty
gendarmerie
approaches the mysterious wherefores of criminal enterpriseâeh?â mused Vance, as we started on our way across town. âMarkham, old dear, how do these robust lads ever succeed in running down a culprit?â
âYou have witnessed only the barest preliminaries,â Markham explained. âThere are certain things that must be done as a
