wails. âYour iPad!â
Rosalind sits down on the bench and puts her head in her hands. âJust ⦠leave it, Olivia. Iâm not up to this. It really is too much.â
Chapter eight
âSpeak up, Zoe,â I yell. âI can hardly hear you.â
Thereâs a whispered jumble of words that I canât decipher, no matter how hard I try. It doesnât help that Kyleâs still playing music in his room, even though itâs half eleven at night and Mum asked him to turn it down ages ago. Amber, who could probably sleep through an earthquake, is snoring softly on the top bunk.
â⦠hate it hereâ¦â Zoe sounds as if sheâs choking back tears. âSheâs horrible, Layla. They both are. I canât stand coming here any moreâ¦â
âYou mean Rosalind and Olivia?â I whisper. Uh-oh â Amberâs stirring now, muttering in her sleep. Still clutching my phone, I slip out of bed and creep to the bathroom, locking the door behind me.
â⦠yelled at Matty,â Zoe goes on. âIâm sure he didnât do it on purposeâ¦â
âDo what?â
âBroke Rosalindâs iPad.â
âOh, Godâ¦â
â⦠I know itâs bad,â she adds, âbut she shouldnât have gone on at us, saying she couldnât handle us and it was all too much for herâ¦â
âThatâs not fair,â I exclaim, and I mean it. Zoe is lucky, but she knows that not everyone has a massive bedroom and balcony, and besides, she doesnât get everything she wants. While I had my ears pierced years ago, sheâs not allowed until sheâs about twenty-seven or something. Iâm not having some stranger puncturing your lobes! is how her mum put it, making it sound as if they pin you down and stab you with a needle. âDidnât your dad stick up for you?â I ask.
She sniffs loudly. âYou know what heâs like. Heâd never do anything to upset Rosalind. He was pretty mad at Matty and then he said we donât appreciate what we haveâ¦â I think about Rosalind, who gave up her job about five minutes after Zoeâs dad moved in so she could spend more time with the ponies. âAnd Mum confiscated my phone,â she adds, ââcause I was late picking Matty up from holiday clubâ¦â
âOh, no⦠I wondered what had happened. Iâve been trying to callââ
âAnd you know what else? Weâre getting an au pair!â
âWhat?â I gasp.
âMum thinks we need one, after I forgot about Mattyâ¦â
I pause, not knowing what to say to make her feel better. âWell, things have been pretty bad here too,â I murmur, filling her in on the changing-tent horrror, and CJ and Toni following me to the park.
âThatâs awful!â she gasps as another voice cuts through the air. âUh, sorry, better go. I snuck downstairs to use the phoneâ¦â
She stops abruptly as Rosalindâs voice booms out, âZoe! What are you doing up at this time? Itâs nearly midnight!â
Seconds later, I hear her dadâs voice. âRosalind, go back to bed, sweetheart. Zoe, what are you thinking, phoning someone in the middle of the night? Is it Mum youâre talking to?â
âNo,â Zoe says miserably, âitâs Layla.â
âTell her goodnight then,â her dad says.
âShe shouldnât be using our phone without asking, Mark,â Rosalind snaps.
âItâs only the phone, for goodnessâ sakeâ¦â
âWell, it all adds up,â she argues. âOur last bill was huge.â
âYes, Iâll remember that when youâre ordering horse blankets that cost four hundred pounds, not to mention the iPadââ
âThe one your son broke!â Rosalind shrieks.
My teeth are jammed together now. I should probably just put the phone down, but I donât
