They weren’t bad, but I was scared of making a mistake and ruining everything.
Finally, I walked back into the bedroom. William was leaning against the headboard with his reading glasses on. He peered at me over the top of his book and patted the bed beside him. He slipped his arm around me when I climbed in and I rested my head against his chest.
“Read to me.” I asked.
He didn’t question me, but started reading out loud. The sound of his voice was enough to relax me and I fell asleep peacefully.
A loud banging at our door woke us both the next morning. My first fear was that one of the neighbors had complained and our landlord was going to kick us out. The next thought was that it could be the police. I wasn’t sure if you could be arrested for having sex too loudly, but I figured you could probably be arrested for most anything. The reality was much worse than either of my worries.
William slipped on a pair of pants and I put on my robe. I stood back as he unlocked the door and opened it. A blonde woman with dark roots and cheap clothing was standing there. She looked like a drug addict. It took me a moment before I recognized her.
“Mrs. Samuels?” I said softly from behind Will.
“What in the hell are you doing here, Laura?” William asked as he eyed her with scrutiny.
She tried to walk into our apartment, but Will blocked the way with his arm. “Your little plaything’s parents told me where she went to school and gave me this address and some money to get here.” Laura put her hand on William’s bare chest and I was overwhelmed with rage. I’d never been so angry in my entire life.
“Why would they do that?” I was hurt, though not surprised that my parents were still trying to ruin my life. I should have never told them where I lived.
His ex-wife ignored my question and spoke directly to Will. “Take me back, William. I know all the ways to make you happy. We have a daughter together.”
“A daughter that you haven’t seen in years. Get out of here. I’m marrying Chastity and I’m not going to let your crazy ass ruin it.” He pushed his ex-wife gently out the door before slamming it in her face.
I hugged my arms around me. “Why does she want you now after all this time?”
He walked over to me quickly and pulled me close. Without hesitation, he kissed the top of my head to comfort me. “Don’t worry, baby. I love you. She’s just after money.”
“I’m not just a plaything, right?” I don’t know why seeing the woman and her words upset me so much, but I couldn’t help it.
William sighed deeply. “Of course not. I wouldn’t have asked you to marry me and moved here if that was the case.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
“Besides, my daughter would kill me if I did anything to hurt you.” He said.
I laughed meekly. “Yeah.”
There hadn’t been any other signs of Laura so life returned to normal. I enjoyed the things I loved: William, sex, and basketball.
Will had told me several times to never walk home from school alone at night. Usually, I listened, but it’s easy to become complacent. I’d stayed late to practice and it was dark when I headed home. William was still at work and I didn’t want to bother him.
My phone rang as I was about to climb the stairs to the floor my apartment was on. I stopped to rummage in my purse for the phone when I was attacked. A person grabbed me from behind and put their hand over my mouth. I kicked, but I was no match for the much larger assailant. He forced me upstairs. Then, I saw her. Laura walked calmly down the hallway. She was carrying my purse. I had dropped it when I was grabbed.
“Hello, Chastity.” She said as she pulled my keys out of the bag and unlocked the door. My attacker shoved me roughly into the room.
He pulled out his gun and pressed it against my temple. “Scream and you’re dead,
