sighed and stood up.
âOkay, Mr. Brody. Thanks for your time.â He held a hand out for Kruger to shake.
âUh, can I rely on your discretion? About my new identity, I mean. I just want to make a fresh start. To get my life back on track.â
âYour secretâs safe with us.â
I looked at Frank in surprise. That was news to me. But I didnât say anything. I shook hands with Kruger, and we left his office.
âWhatâs going on?â I asked Frank as we headed to the car.
âI donât know,â he said.
âWaitâyou donât actually believe him, do you?â I asked in disbelief.
âIâm not sure,â said Frank slowly.
âCome on, Frank! He was just covering. It has to be him.â
âBut he seemed so . . . sincere.â
âHeâd kinda have to be, Frank. He doesnât want to go back to jail.â
âBut donât you think he seemed genuinely confused by the riddle? And he didnât recognize us when we walked in. Iâm sure of it.â
âNo. Iâm not buying it. Heâs just a good actor, thatâs all. Besides, who else could it be if not Kruger?â
âIâve been thinking about that,â said Frank. âWho stands to profit from the Phantom getting back to work?â
âYou mean, besides that man over there,â I said, pointing at Krugerâs office.
âYes,â said Frank, a slight edge to his voice. âBesides him.â
I thought about it. âI give up.â
âMaybe someone whoâs writing a book about the Phantom? Who would see his book probably become a bestseller if the Phantom started up his old tricks again?â
I turned to Frank in amazement. âYou think itâs Trethaway?â
Frank shrugged. âI saw something when we were climbing out his bathroom window. It didnât click at the time, but looking back . . .â
âWhat did you see?â
âA pile of old magazines. Like, this high.â Frank held his hand above his head.
âLots of people have piles of old magazines.â
âSome of these were lying on the floor. Open.â
âSo he reads magazines? Big deal.â
âOr maybe he cuts them up. To make riddles.â He turned to face me. âThink about it. This could only benefit Trethaway. Any controversy will get him free publicity.â
âI suppose. You think heâs smart enough to do that? Trethaway, I mean?â
âWhat is it Dad always says? âIf you judge anyone on appearances, youâre already five steps behind them.âââ
âThen that makes me, like, twenty steps behind,â I said. âBecause I seriously donât think Trethaway could have done this.â
Frank and I climbed into the car. âRegardless, itâs an angle we need to look into,â he said as he pulled into the road. I glanced over my shoulder as we drove away. Kruger was standing by a repaired car, watching us leave.
â¢Â  â¢Â  â¢
I saw it instantly as we drew up to our house. An envelope lying on the steps.
I got out of the car and hurried over. It was the same style of envelope, the same writing. I picked it up and pulled out the sheet of paper as Frank joined me.

I blinked, then looked at Frank. âAnd now? Is this a riddle?â
âMust be.â
âAnd he expects us to crack this before tonight?â
âLooks like it.â Frank sighed. âCall Chet and Amber. Ask them to meet us at the Meet Locker. I think weâll need some help with this.â

She shifted over to give me room. âNot yet. There doesnât seem to be any
