number nineteen?â
The croupier looked baffled. âIâm afraid I didnât see ââ
âItâs Tyâs!â said one of his companions.
âNo, it vuss Bonnieâs. I see her put it there,â said the Russian director.
âBut I tell you I saw Ty ââ
âBonnie â
The table was in an uproar. Ty and Bonnie glared nakedly at each other. The Boy Wonder looked angry. Alessandro ran up.
âLadies, gentlemen. Please! Youâre disturbing the other players. Whatâs the trouble?â
Ty and Bonnie both tried to explain.
âThatâs not true,â stormed Bonnie. âYou let my hand go!â
âIâm sorry,â barked Ty, âbut I donât see why I should. If it were anybody else I might accept her word ââ
âHow dare you!â
âOh, stop mugging. Youâre not doing the big scene now. Itâs a cheap stunt.â
âMugging, am I?â cried Bonnie. âYou â comedian! â
Ty applauded. âKeep it up, sister; youâre going great.â
âPretty boy!â
That stung him. âI ought to slap your face ââ
âYou took the words right out of my mouth!â And Bonnie whacked his cheek resoundingly.
Ty went pale. Bonnieâs bosom heaved. The Boy Wonder whispered sharply in her ear. Alessandro said something to Ty in a curt undertone.
âI donât give a damn. If she thinks she can maul me and get away with it ââ said Ty, his nostrils quivering.
âInsulting pup!â raged Bonnie. âAccuse me of cheating â
âIâll pay you back for that smack if itâs the last thing I do!â shouted Ty across Alessandroâs fat shoulders.
âThereâs more where that came from, Ty Royle!â
âPlease!â thundered Alessandro. âIâll credit each of your accounts with the winnings on that bet. Now Iâll have to ask you, Miss Stuart and Mr. Royle, either to quiet down or leave.â
âLeave?â shrieked Bonnie. âI canât get away from the contaminated air surrounding that fake old ladyâs delight soon enough!â
And she wrenched herself from the Boy Wonderâs grasp and flew to the door. Ty shook Alessandro off and ran after her. The Boy Wonder dived after both.
They all disappeared to the accompaniment of screams and bellows.
âThat,â said Ellery to Lew Bascom, âwas one damfool trick, my playful friend.â
âAinât it the truth?â sighed Lew. âCâmon, toots, letâs watch the wind-up of this bout.â And he dragged his brunette companion away from the wheel and hurried her after the vanished trio.
Something made Ellery turn and look at Jack Royle. The actor still sat at the bar, motionless, as if he had not heard a word of the quarrel behind him.
But in the mirror Ellery caught a glimpse of his lips. They were twisted into a bitter smile.
CHAPTER 4
BATTLE ROYLE
The seven days following that quiet evening at Alessandroâs whistled by Mr. Ellery Queenâs ears with the terrifying intimacy of bullets; it was like being caught out in No Manâs Land between two blasting armies. By the end of the week he had not only collected a smoking mass of notes but several lesions of the nervous system as well.
He was entangled in a mass of old Royle-Stuart clippings in the studio library, trying to unsnarl his notes, when he was summoned by page to Jacques Butcherâs office.
The Boy Wonder looked gaunt, but triumphant. â Mirabile dictu. Weâre sitting on top of the world.â
âPeace, itâs wonderful,â grinned Lew. âIt sure is.â
âTheyâve agreed?â asked Ellery incredulously.
âAbsolutely.â
âI refuse to believe it. What did you use â hypnosis?â
âAppeal to their vanity. I knew theyâd fall.â
âBlythe put up a battle,â said Lew,
