the guy chores around the house and try to take her out to dinner regularly. I hate her always cooking for all of us, even though she loves to cook. She volunteers with a bunch of church ladies, taking meals to the elderly and infirm.â
Emma looked down. âI missed your family. Your mother most of all. I think she was more family to me than Rosemary ever was.â
âAnd she misses you. You know, it wouldnât look like youâre giving in to stop by the house and say hello. Thereâs no commitment involved. It might be time to rethink this feud.â
She laughed uncomfortably. âYou donât understand. Iâm not angry anymore. Itâs just... We canât be friends again, Adam.â
âWho? Me and you?â
âOh, I like the idea of being your friend,â she said with a little laugh. âEspecially since you know these nifty little hideaways where you can have wine under the stars. But I canât have you trying to work things out between me and Riley. Weâre done.â
He gave her a steady, half-amused look. âReally, Emmie Cat? After all youâve gone through in the past few years, youâre worried about friendship with Riley?â
âWe wouldnât trust each other anyway...â
He laughed. âItâs been over fifteen years. You donât have to trust her. Who cares if you trust her? You donât even have to like her. But when you think about things, youâll figure out she was never your enemy.â
âShe wasnât exactly my friend!â
âIf sheâd been a better friend, maybe you couldâve married Jock. Iâm sure that wouldâve been great.â
âCompared to who I did marry? Mightâve been, yeah! At least it wouldnât have been Richard. But determined to have a better life than the one I left behind, Iââ She paused for a moment. âAll right, all right,â she said. âDonât think I havenât looked at it from that angle. But please, donât get ideas about reuniting us.â
He put up his hands, palms toward her. âHeaven help me.â He took a sip of his wine. âThe truth? I wish the two of you could make amends. You were always stronger together than apart. I refuse to believe you still mourn the loss of Jock. It just seems that now, after everything, staying mad at my sister wouldnât be very high on your list of priorities.â
After what sheâd been through with Richard, there was a part of her that wished sheâd married Jock, let him ruin her life, that sheâd never left California, never met Richard. She shook her head. âThatâs certainly trueâmy priorities are completely different now. And I donât really think of our situation as a feud. Iâm sure if we ran into each other weâd be perfectly cordial. Even friendly. But the days of slumber parties are over. I have to get on my feet. I didnât think Iâd start off with a great job, but I thought Iâd get a decent job, even after not working for nine years. I have a degree. With my experience, I could make a damn good concierge or event planner. Turns out that even though I didnât do anything wrong, I also have a shady past by association. Even though I wasnât arrested, people donât trust me. Theyâre afraid I was his partner in crime. After all, he had several employees who rolled over on him, took deals to testify. People suspect me, think I didnât testify because I was protecting him. I didnât testify because I had nothing relevant to say. Let that be a lesson to you, Adam. Donât hang around with felons. Sitting in the courtroom while theyâre being tried might help them, but it wonât do much for you.â
âWhyâd you come back, Emmie?â he asked. âI thought youâd disappear and weâd never see you again.â
âI had nowhere to go,â she said.
