was wondering if I could have a word with you?â Forbes asked.
âBoth of us?â Clint asked.
âUm, yes.â
âLike I said,â Clint repeated, âcome on in.â
Forbes came the rest of the way in and closed the door behind him. He was still dressed for work in a tweed suit, white shirt, and tie.
Slowly, he approached the desk. Starkweather pulled a chair over for him. The sound of the chair dragging on the floor startled him.
âTake it easy, Eddie,â Clint said. âWeâre all friends here.â
Forbes sat down gingerly, looking as if he might bolt from the room any minute.
âWhatâs on your mind, Eddie?â
âI didnât know anyone would g-get hurt,â he said haltingly.
âDid you do something to help the gang rob the bank?â Clint asked.
âI was in the saloon,â he said, âand theyâthey made me sit with them. They made me drink whiskey andâand talk about the bank.â
âSo you told them how much money was in the bank, how many people worked there, like that?â Clint asked.
âY-yes,â he said. âIâI didnât know why they were asking me those questions.â
âSure you knew, Eddie,â Starkweather said. âYou had to know.â
âHow much did they pay you, Eddie?â
âAâa hundred dollars.â
âA hundred dollars?â Starkweather asked. âThatâs what three lives were worth to you?â
âI tell you, I didnât know!â Forbes said. Then he sobbed and buried his face in his hands.
âEddie,â Clint said, âlook at me. Come on, Eddie! Look!â
Forbes took his face from his hands and looked up at Clint.
âYou need to tell us what you know,â Clint said. âAnything that would help us catch the gang.â
âIâI donât know anything.â
âSure you do,â Clint said. âOr you wouldnât be here. Come on, you heard something.â
âWell . . . they talked about a canyon that nobody could ever find. And a cabin.â
âLike the Hole-in-the-Wall?â
âHuh?â
âNever mind,â Clint said. âIs that where they were going to go after the job?â
âI think so.â
âAnd how far is it?â
âIâI canât be sure, but I think they said it would take several days to get there.â
âAnd then how long were they going to stay?â
âThat IâI donât know anything about,â Forbes said. âReally.â
âWherever it is,â Starkweather said, âtheyâre probably gone now.â
âThat may be,â Clint agreed, âbut they may have left something useful behind.â He looked at Forbes. âAnything else, Eddie?â
âIâI donât knowââ
âCome on, Eddie!â Starkweather said. âJust a little more.â
âWell . . . it seemed to me that the gang was separated into two parts.â
âYes?â
âMr. Starkweather, he was very friendly with a man named Santino. And then the other four men stuck together.â
âSantino must be his number one,â Clint said. âLike a foreman.â
âAny other names, Eddie?â
âOne of them was called Vail, but . . . thatâs all I know. Are you going to put me in jail?â
âI should put you in jail for what you did,â Starkweather said, âbut I donât have time!â
âGo home, Eddie,â Clint said. âJust . . . go home. Donât talk to anyone else about this.â
âYouâyouâre not going to tell?â
âNo,â Clint said, âweâre not going to tell.â
âCome on, Eddie,â Starkweather said, grabbing his arm. âLet me help you out the door.â
At the door Forbes looked at Starkweather and said, âI really didnât mean any harm.â
âYeah,â Starkweather
