stared after him. He didn’t care anymore that he was leaving her alone and unprotected, mostly naked, in the middle of a dungeon. He had been disgusted by her. Daphne thought she usually knew when a man was interested, but Finn sent out so many mixed messages that she honestly couldn’t decide. She considered asking him what she was doing wrong, but suddenly decided that she might not want to hear his answer. Sighing in frustration, she turned back to watch the three get redressed and clean their play station.

Chapter 5

Finn woke up at eight on Saturday, his head full of plans for the weekend. They’d had a really productive week, and although the dungeon scene had come too close to unprofessionalism on his part, he thought they were in a pretty good place. He still felt a little strange about what had happened, and how lovely and enthralled Daphne had been, watching Karl, Brad , and Allie together. It had taken every bit of strength he had to wrench his hand away from her breast and get himself out of the room before he lost control. He’d tried to explain to her later that it wouldn’t be professional, and he would lose all credibility if they allowed themselves to get involved sexually. Daphne had simply shaken her head and walked away from him.
Their level of professionalism was something he just could not afford to jeopardize at the moment. They had spent every evening this week working. Finn felt invigorated thinking of all they’d accomplished. It reminded him of why he’d fallen in love with her. She was gorgeous, obviously, but her looks were nothing compared to the energy of her performances and the imagination in her songwriting. He knew there was a real, caring, passionate woman in there somewhere, hidden under the bad-girl persona. He had seen that woman last night, but it wasn’t his place, at least right now, to help Daphne explore her sensual, sexual side. Maybe someday, but not now.
He jumped into the shower, making it as cold as he could stand, resolutely not thinking of Daphne in her see-through lace bodysuit. Instead he forced himself to concentrate on different ways he could reward her for her hard work. Definitely taking the weekend off, maybe driving down the coast, checking out wine country—or maybe not the wine thing. He frowned. A nice dinner, a romantic evening. Maybe he’d even get up the nerve to tell her how he felt and see if someday they might— b ut that might not be the wisest choice. Surely she knew how he felt about her. She might be interested in a fling but probably only so that she could get the upper hand. There was no way she wanted a real relationship with him. Daphne could be with anyone she wanted. All she had to do was beckon and any man would come running. And she chose someone like Blaze. It made no sense.
As if summoned by his thoughts, he heard the roar of a motorcycle and frowned. Blaze was up already? Or maybe just coming home from one of his binges. Either way, he’d be gone or sleeping today, not underfoot, trying to pull Daphne away to go party with him. That was good. The last thing he needed, especially after last night, was Blaze hanging around, coming on to Daphne, trying to convince her to go out and get into trouble. Maybe he shouldn’t have brought her here. It was too close to Sacramento, to temptation. But he’d needed a place that would be open-minded if Daphne chose to run around naked, as she often did when she’d been drinking. Allie had assured him that they had very few other guests lined up, and no one that showed up would be offended.
Finn got dressed and went down for breakfast. This morning there were zucchini and applesauce waffles. He smiled broadly, complimenting Allie on her cooking, as he always did. It wasn’t that her creations were bad, exactly, but he would have loved something normal. Eggs and bacon, or ham. Allie was a sweet woman, but she did have some odd ideas when it came to food. Maybe when Daphne got up he
