she said.
Just then, Freddy and Beth ran to join them.
âWhatâs up?â Henry asked.
Freddy raised her hand. In it was Bennyâs pink cup.
âHey,â Benny said, âwhatâre you doing with my cup?â
âI found it at the rink, Benny,â Freddy told him.
Bennyâs mouth dropped open. The last time he had seen his cup, his snow self was holding it.
âSomeoneâs ruined the ice,â Beth said. âPatches are chipped and broken. People trying to skate there would have trouble staying on their feet. Racing or figure skating would be impossible.â
Freddy held up a chisel. âWhoever did it used this.â
âWho couldâve done this?â Benny wondered aloud.
Beth and Freddy stared at him.
âWait a minute,â Benny said. âYou donât think I did it?â
âOf course they donât, Benny,â Jessie assured him.
Freddy held up the cup again. âWhoever left this here wanted us to think you did it,â she said and gave it to him.
All of a sudden, Jimmy said, âIâll see you later. I have to talk to Mr. Mercer. Maybe heâll call off the games.â He dashed away.
Watching him, Freddy said, âHe is really acting weird. I donât know how many times heâs said we should call off the games.â
Everyone headed toward the lodge.
âHe probably just wants everything to go right,â Beth said.
âWith his parents coming for the awards dinner and everything,â Jessie put in.
Freddy looked at her in disbelief. âHis parents arenât coming for dinner,â she said. âThey never come for anything. They just drop him here. They donât even pick him up until everyone else has gone home.â
âBut he told us they were coming,â Benny said.
âWishful thinking,â Freddy responded.
Matt rushed up. âMy skis are back,â he told them. âI just found them in the equipment shop.â
âThis is getting stranger and stranger,â Freddy commented.
After dinner, Mr. Mercer clapped for silence. âAs you all know, weâve had some trouble this year,â he said. âFirst the keys to the equipment shop were missing, then my tires were flat. Someone damaged the snow sculptures and one of the ice carvings.â Then, he went on, âJimmy Phelps came to talk to me at breakfast this morning. He thought we should call off the ski race because Mattâs skis were missing.â
Henry leaned toward Jessie. âDidnât Matt say he left the skis by the rack just before breakfast?â he whispered.
Jessie searched her memory. âI think so,â she said.
âAnd he didnât know they were missing until the race?â
Jessie nodded.
âHow did Jimmy know they were missing at breakfast?â
Her eyes wide, Jessie looked at her brother. Did he think Jimmy had caused all the trouble?
CHAPTER 15
The Solution
âN ow Iâve just learned that the ice at the rink has been ruined. But weâre not going to cancel anything,â Mr. Mercer said. Then he announced a new schedule. The ice-carving judging would be postponed. A crew was hosing the ice, and the skating competition would take place when it was ready. Sledding would be moved into its time slot.
âMy message to whoever caused the trouble is this,â Mr. Mercer concluded. âIt wonât work. Snow Haven Lodgers never quit!â
Everyone cheered.
Henry and Jessie were on their feet, ready to go.
âCome on,â Henry urged Violet and Benny. âLetâs go back to the cabin.â
âBut I havenât finished my cake,â Benny protested.
Jessie pulled a paper napkin from the holder in the center of the table. âWrap it in this,â she said, âand bring it with you.â
Grumbling, Benny did as he was told.
Henry and Jessie raced through the lounge with Violet and Benny trailing along behind.
