corner to see their little brother standing in the middle of a green, prickly bush. In Bennyâs hand was a gray, grinning gargoyle held high over his head.
âWe can be sure thatâs not a real statue now,â said Jessie.
âYeah,â said Henry. âBenny might be strong for a kid, but nobody could lift one of the real gargoyles over his head.â
Violet looked puzzled. âThat gargoyle looks just like the statues on top of the library, though. If itâs not a real statue, what is it?â
Jessie took the gargoyle from Benny and helped her little brother out of the bushes. She tapped the grinning creature with her finger. A dusting of white powder showered down from the bottom of the gargoyle. âThis isnât made of stone,â she said. âItâs made out of papier-mâché.â
âPapier-mâché!â said Violet. âI know where Iâve heard that word before. It was on a book at the library.â
âThen we need to go back to the library so we can finally solve the mystery of the grinning gargoyles,â Henry said.
âAnd we will,â said Jessie, âjust as soon as we get a good nightâs sleep. We have a very big day tomorrow.â
The Alden children took the papier-mâché gargoyle with them as they headed back into Harper Hall. Leaving the papier-mâché gargoyle with Annabelâto show her it had been a sculpture and not a living, breathing creature outside her windowâthe Aldens headed back to suite 4A.
âI think Annabel had the right idea, wearing those pretty pajamas to bed,â Violet yawned as the children reached the front door of their suite.
âThat reminds me of something you said back in Annabelâs room,â said Henry, holding the door for his siblings. âYou said Raven was a made-up person, and I realized that Holly Page was made-up, too. Iâve been thinking about that ever since, and I think thereâs someone whose name sounds a little bit like Holly and who spends the day looking through pages and pages.â
âI think youâre right, Henry,â said Jessie. âAnd I think after we get some rest tonight, we know who to talk to.â
CHAPTER 8
Checked Out
The next morning, Jessie woke her brothers and sister very early.
âIâm tired,â said Benny. âWe were up so late.â
âWeâre going to be busy today,â Jessie said. âThereâs the groundbreaking ceremony, and then the big gameâ¦â
âAnd we still have the mystery to solve, too,â said Henry, stretching his arms and climbing out of bed. âLetâs head right to the library.â
âIâll leave a note for Grandfather,â Violet said, pulling a purple pen and a pad of paper from her purple duffel bag. âWe can meet him at the ceremony once we have finished our work.â
On the way to the library, the Aldens stopped at the Bruin Beanery.
Behind the counter was a smiling girl with light-brown hair. On the girlâs chest was a name badge that said Annabel.
âHi, Raven!â said Benny. âI mean, Annabel. Weâre going to have a little breakfast before we go to the library.â
âWhat would you like?â Annabel asked. âBreakfast is on the house.â
âOn the house?â Benny asked. âDonât you mean on the roof?â
Annabel laughed. âIt means that whatever you kids want to eat for breakfast is free. Itâs my way of saying thank you for helping me last night when I was scared.â
âThank you,â Violet said. âYouâre really nice, Annabel.â
âYeah,â said Benny. âYouâre about the nicest suspect Iâve ever met!â
âAnnabelâs not a suspect,â Henry said. âNot anymore. But she can do one thing for us.â
âWhatâs that?â asked Annabel.
âYou and your friend with the video camera can
