scream of protest. Bessie began to sob.
With the rock inches from Ruby Maeâs temple, Lundy smiled a dangerous smile.
âWell?â he said. âIâm gettinâ tired of your games. Just tell me where the gold is. Iâd hate to have to get blood all over that pretty hair of yours.â
âRun, Bessie! Run, Clara!â Ruby Mae screamed. âGet help!â
âAinât nowhere they can run in time to save your sorry head,â Lundy said. âNow, tell me how I can get me that gold . . .â
âLet her go, Lundy!â A booming voice filled the air. âNow!â
Lundy released Ruby Maeâs hair and spun around.
To her amazement, there on the bank stood Doctor MacNeill and Miz Christy.
In two strides, the doctor reached Lundy. Lundy tried to resist, but he was no match. The doctor pinned Lundyâs arm behind his back. The rock fell to the ground.
âLemme go!â Lundy moaned. âMy arm! Youâre a-hurtinâ my arm!â
âHurts,
you say?â the doctor inquired.
âBurns like fire!â
âI want you to remember this feeling, Lundy,â the doctor said. âBecause if I ever catch you near these girls again, itâs going to hurt a whole lot worse. You get my meaning?â
Lundy nodded.
âIâm sorry. I didnât quite catch your answer.â
âYes!â Lundy squawked. âYes!â
Slowly the doctor released him. Lundy rubbed his arm. âDocs ainât sâposed to go around hurtinâ people,â he muttered.
Doctor MacNeill shrugged. âI went to a very unorthodox medical school.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Lundy demanded. âYou know I donât know no fancy words.â
âIt means,â Christy said sharply, âthat youâd better watch yourself from now on, Lundy.â
Ruby Mae blinked in disbelief. Sheâd never heard Miz Christy sound so riled, not even that time Lundy had hit Mountie OâTeale.
âBut they said I could have a re-ward,â Lundy murmured, pointing at the girls.
âWell, they were mistaken,â said Christy. âThey donât have the gold in their possession.â
âWho does?â
âItâs safely locked away.â
Lundyâs eyes narrowed. âI bet you got it, Teacher-gal.â
Doctor MacNeill took a step toward Lundy, who backed up instantly. âApparently, I didnât make myself clear,â the doctor said with quiet rage.
Lundy spit on the ground, glaring at Ruby Mae. âYou wonât be princesses much longer,â he said. Then he turned and vanished into the trees.
Christy rushed to Ruby Maeâs side and pulled her close. âAre you all right?â
âFine and dandy,â Ruby Mae reported. âSure am glad you two happened along, though.â
âWe were looking for violets,â Christy said. Her blue eyes were shimmering with tears. âWe almost headed in the other direction, toward Stony Peak. When I think what might have happened if we hadnât been here . . .â
âWeâd have figured somethinâ out, Miz Christy,â Ruby Mae said reassuringly.
Bessie sniffled loudly. âI ainât so sure about that, Ruby Mae.â
âWhatâs that?â Christy asked, pointing to the white handkerchief Ruby Mae was still clutching.
âThis?â Ruby Mae stuffed the handkerchief in her pocket. âNothinâ. Just some olâ scrap of fabric we found by the bank.â
Christy sighed. âI still canât get over how lucky it is we were in the right place at the right time.â
âWell, itâs over now,â Ruby Mae said lightly. âThe doc sure scared the daylights outa Lundy. He wonât be botherinâ us again. His barkâs worse than his bite, anyhow.â
Doctor MacNeill was gazing off in the direction Lundy had run. âDonât be too sure about Lundy Taylor, Ruby
