Bernie.â
Evie nods and tries a smile.
âI didnât draw it on purpose. It just sort of happened.â
Bernie nods back, encouraging in her smile. Her top front tooth is grey and cracked.
âHad you spoken to Antonia much, before this, er, episode?â
âNot really. Sheâs pretty shy, being new at the school.â
âEvie, did you know her brother had died?â
Silence.
âEvie?â
Evie squeezes her fingers. âNo,â she breathes.
âIâm telling you this because of what happened. But I want you to understand itâs a very private and distressing matter for the Cipri family.â Bernie recrosses her legs. âAntoniaâs brother hung himself in the park across the road from where they lived in Brisbane.â
She hears her father gasp. She turns around to him. He stands up and pushes his chair next to her.
âThatâs better,â Nick whispers and gestures back to his wife.
âIâm okay here,â she answers.
Evie is certain her motherâs only just handling this.
Nick turns back to the counsellor. âHow old was he?â he asks.
âEighteen,â replies Bernie, passing Evie a tissue.
âIâm so sorry,â Evie blurts through her tears. âI didnât, I â¦â
Evie canât say anything else. Her throat is swollen and aches. All she can do is choke on the memory of that day.
âEvie, this is a very difficult situation.â Bernie is whispering again. âMy job is to help you not feel alone through this. And my job is also to reassure the students and parents that this was not â how do I say â intentional, on your part.â
Evie nods, itâs hard to get a breath through the sobs.
âThere are many people who donât know how to handle this sort of thing. Theyâre shocked, probably a bit frightened. This situation is â unusual. We have to think about how people may react.â
âOf course,â begins Nick. âOur concern is Evie and supporting her through this. Isnât it, Robin?â
But Robin says nothing.
Evie touches the back of her head. It suddenly feels hot. She presses her hand against the spot, trying to deflect her motherâs stare.
Â
âThanks for this, Alex,â Evie says, as they walk home from the bus stop.
âItâs okay. I know youâd do it for me. Hey, Seb was having a bit of a perve on you, I noticed,â teases Alex.
âPiss off, Alexandra.â
âHe was.â
âSo?â
âPoppy says he bashes everyone with his double bass trying to get a seat near you.â
âHe likes a chat, thatâs all.â
âHe was at Taylorâs on Saturday night.â
âLucky him.â
âPoppy and I reckon he was looking for you.â
âGod, it must have been a boring party.â
âPoppy reckons she heard him say your name.â
âWhat were you guys doing? Stalking him?â
âPoppy said she walked past a group and heard him say âEvieâ something or other.â
âPoppy â no, youâre both sick in the head and in need of a life,â dismisses Evie. She has always considered Seb harmless, almost trustworthy.
They take a drink and a packet of biscuits up to Evieâs room. Alex goes to the toilet. Evie gets her pad and pencils ready.
âOkay,â Alex returns. âWhere do you want me?â
âUm, over there,â Evie points. âIâm just going to the loo, too.â
Evie washes her face and pulls her hair back into what she calls her drawing hairdo. âI can do this,â she whispers. She takes three long, deep breaths and tries to push the horrible face out of her head. âJust relax and draw.â
As she opens the door to her room a rush of panic floods her body. Alex is holding up the portrait in her sketchpad.
âWhoâs this ugly bitch?â
Evie lurches towards her.
