right back with that menu.â She smiled and was off.
âSo you know the owner?â Jayden asked me.
âYes. When I got promoted five years ago to GM at the hotel, she came over to bring menus for our attractions table, and we hit it off. Sheâs about the only one, besides my family, that I can call a friend.â
âThatâs cool.â He smiled, and I couldnât help but smile back. âYou have a beautiful smile.â
âYou think so?â I blushed.
âYes, I do.â
âThank you. I havenât had much of a social life, and I havenât gotten a compliment in . . . Shit.â I laughed. âI canât even remember.â
âI find that hard to believe.â
âWell, itâs true.â I saw Sam approaching.
âJosie, hey, girl.â She leaned in for a hug.
âHey, Sam.â I frowned. âYou smell like onions.â
âI know. Iâm sorry. The prep cook went home with some stomach issues, and that is the job everyone despises, so Iâm on it. Itâs good to see you. Iâve been looking for you.â
âGirl, working long hours.â
âI can imagine,â she said.
Jayden cleared his throat.
âIâm sorry. Sam. This is Jayden. Jayden, this is my dear friend Samantha.â
âNice to meet you.â He flashed his gorgeous smile.
âYou too,â Samantha replied. They shook hands. âListen, Iâm going to go and delegate and get out of these kitchen clothes. I have someone Iâve been dying for you to meet,â she announced.
I nodded. âOkay.â
âPlease, you guys, donât leave,â Samantha said. âIt may be an hour before he arrives. Can you hang a bit?â
I looked at Jayden. I knew I could stay, but I didnât want him to feel obligated.
âSure. We are good,â he answered for us both. Instantly, I had a chill. I loved a man who took charge.
âGreat. Let me go to my office, and Iâll be back shortly,â Samantha said.
We both nodded. I turned and grabbed the menu, even though I already knew Iâd get the steak quesadillas.
âSo, tell me a little more about yourself,â Jayden said.
I told him the short version of me coming to America, marrying young, and my ex-husband ending up in prison. Gave him the clean version of my troublemaker, Ana, and spent time praising my joy, Angelica.
We talked until Sam returned. Shortly after, her friend Ethan arrived. He was cool, nice-looking, and I could tell he was into her just by the way he gazed at her. And since she had been single for as long as Iâd known her, I hoped he was a qualified potential boyfriend.
The four of us laughed a lot, drank a lot, and ate all we could. I was tipsy and felt high. I wished that Jayden and I were a couple, because I didnât want our night to end. But I wasnât supposed to be getting so personal with a guest.
Ethan and Sam were sitting close to each other and whispering in each otherâs ears, so Jayden and I shared our own little intimate conversation.
âAre you ready to walk back?â he asked.
âI am, but Iâm not. I know itâs close to closing, but I donât want the evening to end. I donât usually have a connection with a guest. No fraternizing is rule number one.â
âI see.â His facial expression became sad.
âListen, Iâve been professional with all my guests but you. Iâll admit you are the first guest that gave me . . . I donât know. Letâs just say you are different. However, until you check out, we canât do much.â
âSo, in the morning Iâll check out.â
âOh no. Donât do that. I mean, I donât want you to leave.â
âI donât want to leave, either, but I want to get to know you, and if a âno fraternizing with guestsâ policy is going to keep me from getting to know you, Iâll find another
