before.â
âYeah, with Thor behind you all the way,â said Roskva.
âWeâll be back with Idunn before you know it,â said Alfi.
Freya stared at him.
âHow can you be so cheerful?â said Freya, scowling.
âA man should be happy until his dying day,â said Alfi, shifting restlessly from foot to foot. âMy grandpa used to say itâs always better to live than lie dead.â
Yeah right, thought Freya. Good for your grandpa. She gnawed on her frayed sleeve.
Roskva whistled. Freya heard pounding hooves, and Sleipnir galloped over, snorting, his eight legs churning the stony ground.
âHurry up!â said Snot, striding towards the gleaming river. âWe want to get as far as we can before nightfall.â
âSnot! Youâre going the wrong way,â shouted Alfi. âJotunheim is north-east. We need to head for the mountains past the River Irving.â
Snot stalked over to Alfi. He towered over him.
âAre you as brave as me?â he bellowed. His crooked brows bristled.
âFar from it,â said Alfi, cowering.
Snot kicked Alfiâs feet from under him. Alfi fell over.
âJust remember that and weâll get on fine,â said Snot. âDonât you tell me which way to go.
Iâm
leading this quest.â
âSays who?â said Roskva.
âSays me,â said Snot. âI am Wodenâs chosen warrior.â
âWeâve all been chosen,â said Roskva.
âActually, I think Freya is leader,â mumbled Alfi. âShe blew Heimdallâs horn.â
âWhat?â said Snot. He looked like he was about to attack Alfi again.
â
She
âs our leader?â said Roskva. Her eyes flashed.
Iâm leader? thought Freya. If she thought it would do any good she would have howled. No one had ever asked her to lead anything. Iâm a follower, thought Freya. Iâm Betty the brunette, the leaderâs best friend. Notâ
âI should be leader,â said Roskva. âIâm the smartest.â
Snot glared at them. âI take orders from no one but Woden. And certainly not from children.â
âFor the last time we are not children!â screamed Roskva.
Freya looked at the furious faces around her. Sleipnir snorted and stamped the ground, eager to go. We havenât even set off and already weâre fighting, she thought.
âSo go on, Freya, tell us, what makes you so special?â said Roskva. âYou wear no rings or gold arm bracelets so you must be poor and without protectors. Youâre small. Youâre very plain. You canât even walk on Bifrost without vomiting. And yet the Gods have chosen you and Alfi thinks you should lead us. Are you a seeress?â
âNo,â said Freya. At least she didnât think she was.
âThen whatâs so special about you?â Roskva repeated.
Freya tried to focus.
âNothing,â said Freya.
What talents did she have? Did she even have any?Sheâd been in her schoolâs âGood as Goldâ book twice in a row. She held the school record for the most pancakes eaten in ten minutes. And she could ⦠and she had ⦠Somehow Freya didnât think being good as gold or able to stuff her face with pancakes was going to help her much now. How depressing to be twelve years old and good at nothing.
âWhat are
you
good at?â asked Freya.
âIâm the fastest runner in Midgard,â said Alfi. âWell, I was. I imagine I still am. Iâm certainly the oldest.â He grinned.
âIâm almost as fast as you,â said Roskva hotly. âAnd letâs face it. Iâm a lot smarter.â
âA quick tongue often talks itself into trouble,â said Alfi.
âAnd out of it,â said Roskva.
Freya felt as if she were watching a ping-pong match between brother and sister.
âWe must go NOW,â bellowed Snot. His fists clenched. âWe have to
