He barked a humorless laugh. âFat lot of good itâs done us. We might as well be destitute. Weâre sitting on a fortune in natural resources and we canât make a go of it. Saddest story youâll ever hear.â
Vanya sighed, obviously having heard all this many times before. âNext, heâll be railing about the gold mine.â
âSo thereâs still gold?â Remi asked.
âOf course there is. But you wouldnât know it to look at us, would you? And as Vanya alluded to, people get frustrated at all the jockeying and ineptness, so they kick their administration out with regularity, so the mentality of most politicians is to grab what you can while youâre in office because chances are you wonât be much longer. Itâs a vicious circle. One Iâve lived in the last twenty years.â
Vanya eyed the big man with a gentle gaze. âOrwen here is one of the last good ones. Donât let him sour you on Guadalcanal. Itâs got its share of problems, but itâs a beautiful place filled with warm-hearted people.â
Manchester drained his beer. âAnd crocodiles. Canât forget them. Maybe we should let them have a turn at running the thing. Canât do much worse than we have.â
The conversation stalled, and Vanya did her best to bring it back tocenter. âItâs confession time. I havenât been completely honest with you two,â she said in a low voice.
âReally?â Remi said with arched eyebrows.
âYes. Iâm a bit of a research fanatic, and when I went home to change, I googled Sam and Remi Fargo. I suppose you know what I found.â
Sam looked sheepish. âCanât believe everything you read on the web.â
âPerhaps.â She eyed Manchester. âOrwen, Iâll have you know youâre sitting with celebrities. Sam and Remi are renowned treasure hunters.â
Manchesterâs face could have been carved from granite. âTreasure hunters?â
âA distortion the media loves. They sensationalize everything,â Remi explained. âWeâve been fortunate a few times in locating significant finds. Some of our archaeological projects have turned up some historically valuable items. But itâs not like we find treasure and keep it,â she said, frowning. âIt goes to the rightful owners for charitable work and enrichment.â
âThatâs right. Itâs a case of man bites dog. Anything to sell papers,â Sam echoed.
âAnd modest as well as famous,â Vanya said. âThe Fargos have discovered more hidden booty than anyone else on the planet, Orwen. Donât let their humility fool you.â
Sam waved a hand. âMost people have better things to do than root around in old temples and the like. Thatâs a meaningless statistic,â he said. âItâs like having seen more ghosts than anyone. Doesnât say much.â
âWhere did you say you were diving?â Manchester asked, his tone polite but with a hint of frost to it.
Remi smiled megawatts at him. âWe didnât. Itâs our friendâs expedition, so not ours to talk about. But I can assure you thereâs no treasure involved.â
His eyes narrowed. âItâs a small island. Iâm sure everyoneâs alreadytalking about the attack. Secrets like that donât stay that way very long around here.â
âProbably, but we have to respect our friendâs wishes. Heâs an academic and these kinds of things are important to him. Bragging rights,â she said.
Manchester nodded. âI completely understand. I just thought that perhaps I could be of service if you need any help with permits or that sort of thing.â
Remi gave a polite yawn behind her hand, and Vanya took the hint and gestured for the check. When it came, Sam snatched it from the waiterâs hand before she could reach it. âPlease. Let us buy dinner. That
