Xavier.â
âBailey, I donât know what else to tell you. Iâm not lookingââ
âFor a relationship,â she said, finishing my sentence for me. âIâve heard that shit for an entire year now. Itâs old news.â
âGet used to it, because itâs the truth and itâs not going to change.â
âI understand I have no choice, and I simply enjoy hanging out with you, sweetie.â
âThatâs cool. Same here, Bailey.â
âI have my last few days of freedom for a while coming up before we start shooting our next movie project. You know how long those days can be. Wouldnât you like for me to come back to Houston and hang out with you? You never showed me around the city. We always managed to wind up in bed. Imagine that.â
âThatâs fine, as long as there arenât any expectations.â
âThere arenât. I just want to chill, have a good time, and screw you senseless. Know what I mean?â she kidded.
âWell, since you put it like that. Sounds good to me.â
âOkay, sweetie. Iâll let you know the details later.â
âCool.â
âOkay, bye, love.â
âWait. Bailey?â
âYes?â
âMake sure you make reservations at a hotel close by.â
âBut I thoughtââ
âI can send you suggestions if youâd like.â
âDonât worry. I can find one myself. I wouldnât want to rain on your parade by staying with you.â
With that she hung up, but I had no doubt I would see her soon. And just as quickly she was an afterthought.
âBaby, wake up,â the mother said, gently lifting the child from underneath the warm blanket and into her arms.
The young child wiped the sleep from her eyes with the back of her tiny hand and yawned loudly. She looked around, unsure of her surroundings.
Then she remembered she was still at Uncle Dannyâs house. She had fallen asleep on the sofa in the living room while her mother and Uncle Danny went into his bedroom and closed the door. That was a long time ago.
âCome on, baby.â She loved when her mother talked nice to her, which was rare, and called her baby. Those were the few times she felt special and not invisible. She wrapped her arms tighter around her motherâs neck.
âAre we leaving?â she asked innocently. It was now after midnight on a school night. She should have long been home, safe and sound in her own bed.
âNo. Just be quiet, and be a good girl for me,â her mother whispered, like they were playing a game.
âOkay, Mama.â
âJust do what he says, and be a good girl.â
The young girlâs eyes stretched as big as saucers when they entered the musty bedroom of Uncle Danny. To her surprise, he was buck naked, lying on his back, and she saw his thingy, which he didnât even attempt to hide. She looked to her mother for assurance, but her mother averted her eyes. Her mother placed the child in the middle of the bed, disrobed, and slipped beneath the sheets as if it was as normal as brushing her teeth.
Right before the young child went to her special place, the one in her mind, she heard her mother say, âNow, you can have both of us. Two for one. Tonight is your lucky night.â
That made Uncle Danny very happy, because he smiled and showed every rotten tooth in his mouth.
Chapter 11
Pilar
âDreâ, how sweet of you to call. Yes, thank you. I enjoyed talking to you as well the other night. That was crazy. I still canât believe we talked for so long. Three hours. Iâve never done that before.â
âDinner? This weekend? Sure, I would love to. Letâs see. Today is Tuesday, and Iâm going to be out of town until Sunday. Okay, Sunday, it is.â
âCanât wait, either. Take care.â
With a huge grin on my face, I ended the call on my cell. I just loved, loved, loved it when a plan
