anywhere.â
Her heart rate increased. âIf that whole naked photograph thing was a set up then the best thing is surely for me to get as far away from here as possible. Iâll go somewhere no one can find me.â
He started to laugh, but there was no trace of humour in the rich masculine sound. It was loaded with cynicism and derision. âAre you really that naive? The press can find anyone.â
That news shook Evie. âBut why would they want to? Iâm no one.â
âPerhaps you were âno oneâ before you chose to lie naked on my bed with me, but now youâre a person of extreme interest.â
âI wasnât with you.â
âYes, you were.â
âWell, that part was your fault. You were the one who kissed me and, quite frankly, I have no idea why you did that.â And she wished he hadnât because, in the midst of this crisis, those feelings kept rushing back to torture her.
His mouth, moving over hers with erotic purpose.
âNone of this is my responsibility. You were the one lying there naked.â He issued that statement with such arrogance that Evie simply gaped at him, wondering how it was possible to be terrified of someone and turned on at the same time.
âAnd that means what? That you kiss every naked woman you see?â
âNormally, the woman gets naked after I kiss her,â he drawled. âThatâs the usual order of things. Despite the lengths some women go to attract my attention, no one has ever gone quite as far as stripping naked and lying on my bed. That was a first.â
âI thought weâd established that I was set up!â Evieâs voice rose. âIf Iâd known you were going to arrive early, do you honestly think I would have been lying there?â
âYes. That photograph will sell for a fortune.â
âMaybe it will, but it wonât be me making the fortune,â Evie snapped, stalking out of the bathroom with the throw trailing behind her like a wedding gown.
âWhere do you think youâre going?â
âOut of here. Iâm sick of seeing your reflection in the mirrors. One of you is bad enough. Ten is more than I can take. Iâm going to ring Housekeeping and get them to send up a uniform and then Iâm going to go and hide somewhere even the press canât find me.â
âRunning is not the way to handle this.â
âWell, if you can think of a different plan, Iâd love to hear it. This is easy for you. You have bodyguards and you own tall buildings with fancy security. All you have to do is lock yourself in your gilded palace until the fuss dies down, but I have to live with the fact that photograph is out there. Everyone who wants a laugh can look at it. Theyâll probably start a Facebook page for itâ The biggest bottom in the world .â Evie tripped on the throw and stumbled. Steadying herself, she blinked back tears. âI have to live with the fact that my eighty-six-year-old grandfather is going to see me with my naked bottom in the air, kissing a stranger! If he has another one of his turns it will be all your fault.â
âWhich is going to shock him most? Seeing your naked bottom, or the fact that youâre kissing a stranger?â
Evie snatched the phone up. âYouâre not even funny.â
âDo I look as though Iâm laughing? You have no idea how serious this is for me. For you, itâs embarrassing; for me, itâsââ He broke off, his voice unsteady and Evie paused with the handset in her hand, transfixed by the raw emotion she saw in his eyes.
âFor you itâs what? A deal you donât want to lose? Is this an ego thing? It has to be because you clearly donât care about the embarrassment and I canât honestly believe youâd be making this much fuss about money. I mean, itâs not as ifyou donât already have plenty!â When he didnât
