father wants you to come home.â
âHow did you find me?â she asked.
Dieter shrugged. âGPS.â
Aliciaâs lips went slack. âYouâre not serious. Dad has a tracking device on my car?â
âTheyâre on all his cars,â Dieter said. âI would have thought youâd known that.â
âItâs obvious I donât know him nearly as well as I thought I did,â she muttered.
Dieter took a step closer. âSo youâll come with me now?â
Aliciaâs pulse skipped as she took a nervous step back. âIâm not going anywhere with you.â
âOh, but you are,â Dieter said, and lunged, only to find himself suddenly face-to-face with a man whoâd come out of nowhere.
Dieter frowned, then looked at Alicia. âWho is this? Is he with you?â
John answered, âWho I am is not what you should be worrying about. I heard the lady tell you to back off at least twice, and youâre not paying attention.â
Dieter jabbed a finger at John, poking him in the chest. âYou arenât part of the equation,â he said. âI take my orders from her father, and he wants her home.â
When John grabbed the finger and twisted it backward, it sent a shooting pain up Dieterâs arm all the way to the back of his jaw. Even worse, it somehow rendered him immobile, and he didnât know why.
âOw! Shit! Let me go. Let me go!â he yelled.
But John continued to maintain pressure as he addressed Alicia. âI take it this man isnât your husband?â
Aliciaâs voice was shaking. âNo, he works for my father.â
âDid you do something illegal?â John asked.
Alicia rolled her eyes. âNo.â
âYouâre not wanted by the police?â
âNo. Lord, no.â
âIâm assuming youâre of legal age.â
Alicia stifled a snort, which John interpreted as a yes.
âThen Iâd say youâre free to do what you want.â
Aliciaâs eyes filled with tears all over again.
âIâll never be free again,â she said, more to herself than to John, but he heard it and knew her peril was working to his advantage.
John looked back at Dieter, whose face was turning paler by the minute.
âAre you going to keep following her?â
âItâs my job,â Dieter moaned, still trying to figure out why he felt numb all over.
âThen I guess sheâll need a head start,â John said, then grabbed Dieterâs neck with his other hand and squeezed. Dieter dropped between the car and the gas pump like a stone.
Alicia shuddered. What had just happened? âI need to hide,â she mumbled, still staring at Dieterâs body.
âWhy are you afraid of your father?â
She wiped her hands across her face. âThis is a nightmare. Pleaseâ¦I need to get another car and get to a place where he canât find me until I can figure all this out.â
John exhaled softly. Bingo. Right into his lap.
âI can help.â
Alicia swayed where she stood, then looked up. His eyes were so dark that she couldnât see the pupils. She shivered. She didnât know this man from Adam. He could be a serial killer, a sadistâanything. Then she asked herself: Was her father any different? Should she trust the devil she knew or the devil she didnât?
John felt her pulling away. He had to act fast.
âMy name is John Nightwalker. I live about fifteen miles from here, and as you can see, I have a car. Youâllhave to leave your car here anyway, and Iâll help you all I can. Just tell me what you need.â
Alicia saw his lips moving, but sheâd lost track of his words as soon as heâd said his name. The skin was still crawling on the back of her neck, and she had the strangest urge to cry.
âSoâ¦what do you say?â John asked.
Alicia blinked. âUmâ¦I, uhâ¦â
