that she couldnât have a cigarette. âFirstly, we donât want a baby. Not now. Not ever. Johnâs even more against it than I am. And you know what happened to him at college.â
âBut he was only a kid himself then and heâs older now. And he loves you. Surely, that makes a difference?â
âI hope so, Diane, I really hope so.â Sally felt nauseous and it wasnât morning sickness.
âWhat about you?â
âIâm pregnant. I donât have a choice. I guess itâll grow on me.â She laughed mirthlessly at the pun.
âBut youâre worried about John.â
âAh, thereâs the rub.â How, she feared, would Diane judge her? âItâs not as simple as that.â But it was too much to bear alone. âI donât know⦠if John is the father.â
âYou what?â Sally didnât think sheâd ever seen a jaw drop before. âSal? What happened?â
What happened? It was an appropriate question and Sally told her friend about âwhat happenedâ, finishing with, âso you see, it could be Jamesâs baby.â She dropped her eyes, waiting for condemnation.
âYou idiot.â Dianeâs voice didnât sound damning. âIt could have been anyone, you know. James is a bastard. Does anyone else know â apart from James?â She touched Sallyâs arm. âSally. Look at me.â
It felt unreal. Rousing herself she looked at Diane. âNo, I donât think so. Or at least, I doubt it.â
âYou poor thing.â They stared at each other until Diane spoke again. âDo you want to know what I think you should do?â
She nodded.
âMuch as is grieves me that âDaddyâs boyâ will get away with it, the baby probably is Johnâs and he must never believe otherwise. Youâre not Jamesâs first conquestâ¦â
âYouâ¦?â
âNo, not me, but there were others. You donât need to know. Heâs a predator. But you and John, well, youâll be terrific parents. Johnâs older now, and he loves you. Heâll be back once heâs got his head round it. He might even grow to like it! The babyâs his; it will grow up with John as its father which will make him so. Think about it Sally, lifeâs tough enough without letting bloody James Black ruin it for you both â in fact, for all three of you.â
Words were easy. Sally shook her head then stood wearily. âIâm going to make some tea.â Once in the kitchen she sat and it was Diane who made the tea.
âHere. Tea â panacea for all that ails.â
âThanks. You may be right but I donât think John deserves to have a baby dumped on him.â
âNo, Sally, he doesnât. But he isnât going to have a baby dumped on him. You need to start getting used to the idea that the two of you are going to be parents. Together. Otherwiseâ¦well, youâre going to ruin the lives of three people over one mistake. Youâre going to suffer, whatever you do â thatâs punishment enough. Donât ruin Johnâs and the babyâs futures too. Donât you think that James has some blame for what happened? Iâll bet heâs not thrashing himself to death over it!â
âHeâ¦â
âI know he doesnât know. But heâll know soon enough, and heâs bound to wonder.â
âYou donât thinkâ¦?â
âNo fear! He wonât let you get in the way of what he wants. But if I were you Iâd watch your back where heâs concerned. Sally, think of it this way. If it had been me whoâd been seduced by James, would you, as my friend, forgive me?â
She answered without hesitation. âOf course I would, and I wasnât seduced. Iâm sorry to say I participated.â
âWeâre talking in circles. Think about it, Sally, forgive yourself, and get on
