Iâm fine. Are you okay? You seem uneasy.â
âHow is it you always know when Iâm troubled?â
He smiled. âI donât know. I guess I just do. What can I do to help?â
âItâs about my father. Heâs...â
Tysonâs expression instantly changed. âWhat happened? Is he okay?â he interrupted, obviously concerned.
âYes, heâs fine,â she said, noting his abrupt reaction and seeing his strained expression. âApparently heâs better than fine. All of a sudden heâs eating right, exercising and taking care of himself. I couldnât be happier.â
Tyson nodded with relief. âGood. Iâm glad to hear it.â
âCome, we can talk in the living room,â she said, walking past him. He followed, looking around at all the decorations.
âWow. I see youâre all ready for Christmas. This is incredible. I forgot how much your father loves the holiday season.â
âYeah, he does,â she said. âHe always tried to make it extra special for me because of my motherâs death. He never wanted me to feel sad.â She watched as he walked over to the Christmas tree and then to the fireplace mantel, where he fingered the stocking for his daughter. âHe put up Christmas stockings for you and your daughter.â
âYes, I know,â Tyson said, then turned to her. âHe told me. He also invited us over for Christmas dinner, but that was before you came home. Iâm sure heâll want to spend the holiday with you.â
âThereâs no reason for plans to change on my account. Thereâs always room for one or two more.â
âThank you. So, tell me, whatâs troubling you?â
âI need you to tell me the whole truth about whatâs going on with my father. Is his business in real danger?â
âYes, it is. Ben has made some questionable business decisions, and unfortunately, itâs put his company in serious jeopardy.â
âIf itâs about money, I have a trust fund from my mother and her family. Itâs worth quite a bit of money. I want to use that to help him.â
Tyson shook his head. âBen has taken that off the table.â
âIâm putting it back on. I have a stake in the company, too.â
âWeâve talked about opening the company to public shares or taking on an investment partner.â
She shook her head. âI canât see him doing that. Heâs a very private man. I donât think heâd be happy to have others involved in running it. But isnât the real-estate climate improving?â
âYes, it is, but at this point heâs in too deep and time has already run out on him. Maybe you can talk to him. Heâs stubborn. And unfortunately, he may have no choice. Whether or not he is reluctant, private investors may be his only alternative.â
She nodded. âIâll try.â
âGood. Thank you. I guess Iâd better go.â He walked away.
âEarlier, when I asked about my father, you seemed worried.â Tyson stopped and turned to her. âYou know something else about him, donât you?â she prompted. âWhat arenât you telling me?â
âWhat do you mean?â he asked innocently.
She shook her head, knowing his expressions too well. Just like her father, he was hiding something. âPlease donât play games with me, Tyson. This is too serious. I know you just as well as you think you know me. Youâre hiding something, just like Dad. What is it? Whatâs going on?â
âYou need to talk to your father about this.â
âHeâll give me the same double-talk I get from you. Tyson, please, if you know something about my father, tell me. I have to know.â
Tyson took a deep breath. âWhy donât we sit down?â he offered.
Her insides tensed. This didnât sound good already. She quickly assumed that
