still under attack.â
âVery much so. For now,â I said. Then on the command channel: âAmira, can you get me a big boost on the common so I can get a message out to everyone?â
âThinking of replacing HQ?â
âYes. We have the power plant. Now letâs start securing the base.â
Amira raised an eyebrow.
I gave the mental command, and my helmet snapped open and slid into the back of my armor. âIf we have the plant, then the hills are secure. Get me on the common channel, Amira.â
I couldnât tell if she shrugged, but her silvered eyes looked upward, as if she was recalling something. âYouâre live, Lieutenant.â
Ignoring her slight mocking tone, I said, âAll platoons, this is Devlin Hart. We have the power plant secured. The hills are still ours, even though the Conglomeration has taken the tunnels. But now itâs time take back Shangri-La.
âI need volunteer squads to get down here. It will be door by door, but we have a systems specialist that you can coordinate with. Letâs flush them the hell back to wherever they came from!â
+Â Â +Â Â +Â Â +
Amira broke out of her trance, mind running deep inside Shangri-Laâs networks.
âHow many?â I asked.
âThree thousand got into the hills,â she said wearily. âPlatoons agreed to send down a thousand to try and secure the tunnels.â
âAnd?â
âI got them in,â she said. âStaggered opening doors to let them clear through by sections. Most of the cable tunnels are secure. A few hundred are fanning out from those points. Theyâre breaking back into HQ, but itâs heavy with drivers and raptors there. And thatâs about as far as we can go right now. And, Devlin?â
âYeah?â
âStop pacing. Youâre in armor. Youâre making the engineers nervous.â
I stopped and looked around. The civilians were staring at me.
âWe need more boots in the tunnels,â I said.
âThe other officers wonât,â Amira said. âThey want the hills covered. A way out.â
âWell, we get HQ back at least,â I muttered. âBut we can pull this all back.â
The sound of gunfire interrupted me. I moved up toward the doors and glanced up the tunnel at Lana Smalley. âSmiley?â
âClear!â
I stomped back to Amira. âHQ? Anyone alive?â
She smiled. âThey found only bodies. Theyâre holding it now, though.â
For now.
This was all a balancing act that could go horribly wrong so quickly, I realized. And it would take days, or weeks, to clear everything out down here.
But it was possible.
It was damn possible.
âHQ incoming,â Amira said.
âWhoâs taken command?â I asked.
âThe officers are still in the hills. Privates who volunteered to push through,â she said. âThey have a link upstairs. Theyâre saying other bases are scattering to the plains; theyâre managing to get uplinks and orbital bombardment support.â
âAre we expected to abandon the base as well?â I asked.
âNo. If we can hold, we are to stay put. However, other officers on the plains and some Accordance chatter are rumoring something big is up from everyone upstairs.â
âLike what?â I asked.
âItâs fucking alien high command,â Amira said. âTheyâre not going to tell us âapes,â are they?â

Ken popped back into the command channel. âWe canât call down orbital strikes on Shangri-La itself; they wonât engage until weâre out in the open and headed for rally points.â
I looked over at Amira. âBut HQ is still telling us to stay put?â
Sheâd been glazed over, off in a world of networks to help coordinate clearing out the tunnels for hours. She looked exhausted.
âAmira?â
âWeâre still staying put,â she said,
