face that she was thinking the same thing he was.
Gemma suddenly seemed to turn shy. âLet me think about it.â
âBuy you a new smoke detector,â he said enticingly.
She tipped her head up, smiling at him. Sean felt his heart reel in his chest. âYou already promised that.â
âGuess itâs time to get more creative, huh? Tell you what.â He slipped his arm around her shoulder. âHow âbout I come up with some great way to make my deception up to you, and in return you agree to have dinner with me one night?â
âIâll think about it,â Gemma said lightly, ducking out of his embrace.
Sean grinned, shaking his head. âYouâre torturing me on purpose, arenât you?â
âTorture? Moi? â
âThen say yes to dinner with me.â
âIâll think about it,â Gemma promised. âAfter you surprise me.â

The next morning , Gemma slid into her regular booth at the Happy Fork and waited for Stavros to come and harass her. She hadnât gotten any sleep; instead, she had lain awake thinking about Sean: Sean kissing her, Sean peeling off her clothing, Sean whispering in her ear all the things he wanted to do to her. She was glad when Frankie appeared. She was bursting with the need to talk about him.
Before she could get a word in, Stavros appeared, pouring Frankieâs coffee and then depositing an empty coffee cup in front of Gemma. He passed the steaming pot back and forth beneath her nose.
âSmells good, no?â
âSmells great,â Gemma concurred. âPour me a cup.â
Stavros and Frankie exchanged shocked glances as Stavros complied.
âSugar?â he asked in a stunned voice. âCream?â
Gemma nodded. âBoth.â
Looking as if he might pass out, Stavros ran to fetch them for her.
âIf this isnât a sign of imminent apocalypse, I donât know what is,â said Frankie.
âNo apocalypse,â Gemma rejoined gaily. âIâm just up for trying new things.â
Frankie caught her drift and her arm shot across the table. âDonât start yet; here comes Stavros with your milk and cream.â
His demeanor was now obsequious, as if Gemma were a queen whose pronouncement he awaited. She fixed her coffee and, with Stavros and Frankie both looking on intently, raised it to her lips.
âWell?â he asked.
âBest coffee Iâve ever tasted.â
âHa!â Stavros beamed down at her knowingly. âI knew that would be your answer! Hasnât Stavros been telling you this for years?â
âYou have,â Gemma admitted.
He waddled off looking as if heâd just won the lottery.
âWhatâs going on?â Frankie demanded.
First she told Frankie about the firefighters coming to her apartment. Then she told her about the hockey game. She finished with details of Domenicaâs christening party. Frankie practically lunged across the table.
âYouâve crossed paths with this guy three times?â she said excitedly. âAnd he has blue eyes?â
âYes.â
âLike in your vision?â
âYup.â
âYou thinkâ?â
âI donât know.â For the first time, Gemma felt uncertain. âI want it to be. I think.â She drank some coffee. âHe asked me out to dinner,â she added shyly.
Frankieâs eyes bulged so far out she looked like a cartoon. âAnd you said no?â
âI said maybe.â
â Maybe? Why? Because Venus isnât in the third house of Lexus or some crap like that?â Frankie eyed her critically. âSomething else is going on here. Why donât you want to go out with this guy?â
Gemma peered at Frankie over the rim her coffee cup. âIf I tell you, do you promise not to laugh?â
âNo. Now tell me.â
âI think Iâm a little nervous about going out with him because heâs a
