âYou know, the way you canât drive to your left-hand side if your life depended on it.â
There was more laughter and applause. Not thatheâd driven muchâmostly he just set up down on low post and powered through his coverageâbut weâd noticed his difficulties when we were watching them play. Right or wrong, though, it wasnât the smartest thing to say to somebody as big and mean as him.
He walked right over to us. As he got closer I got more anxious. I had to fight the urge to simply grab Kia, turn and run away as fast as my legs would carry me. I stood still. He stopped when he was right in front of usâactually he was towering above us. His shirt was stuck against his body, held in place by the same sweat that dripped off his face.
He bent down so that his face was practically level with mine.
âWhether I drive with my left hand or not, it isnât my life thatâs in danger here,â he said softly.
I swallowed hard.
âYou scared?â he asked.
âYeah,â I admitted honestly.
âIâm not!â Kia snapped.
âMaybe you should be,â he said.
âWhat are you going to do, kick this ball over the fence too?â Kia asked, holding the ball out.
I couldnât believe her nerve. She had to be the guts-iest person Iâd ever met. She probably really
wasnât
afraid of him.
He shook his head. âNope. Shouldnât have done that to your ball,â he said, pointing at me. âTell you what. You two amuse me. A couple of gutsy little dudes.â
âDo I look like a dude to you?â Kia demanded.
âOkay, okay, donât get mad!â he said, holding his hands up like he was surrendering. âYou want to stand around and watch, you can, and nobody will bother you.â
âWe donât want to stand around and watch,â Kia said.
âWe want to play ⦠against you and your buddies. That is unless you lose the game youâre playing and then weâll play the other team instead. It doesnât matter to us who we beat as long as we get a chance to beat somebody.â
He turned to his two buddies. âSheâs got guts, donât she?â He turned back to us. âAgain, little girl, no matter how much you want to play us in three-on-three, youâre still short a player.â
âHeâll be here ⦠soon.â
The big guy shook his head, but he smiled.
âCome on, Ben, letâs play ball!â one of his partners yelled out.
âComing ⦠coming!â he called out. âYour third man comes, weâll play you. I figure thatâs the only way Iâm ever going to get you to shut up.â
That probably wouldnât get Kia to shut up either.
âJust one more thing,â Kia said. âI want to make sure you remember what you said. If we beat you, youâll go away and leave the court, right?â
âIf you beat us, Iâm not just leaving the court. Iâm leaving the planet!â one of the others said to a whole chorus of laughter.
âSo youâll go away?â Kia asked.
âWeâll go ⦠Of course, that means when we win, weâll never see you two again ⦠right?â
âIf you win, then weâll go,â Kia said. âDeal?â
âDeal.â
Kia held out her hand and the big guy shook it.
âNow if you donât mind, how about letting us get back to this game ⦠you know, so we can figure out who gets the honor of playing against you next game.â
âNo problem,â Kia said.
We walked off the court and stood over by the fence.
âWhat time is it?â Kia asked.
I looked at my watch. âHe was supposed to be here two minutes ago.â
âNick,â Kia said quietly. âIs that him?â
âWhere?â
She pointed to a black Escalade that was pulling into the parking lot. It had fancy rims and was big and shiny. I couldnât see
