going to do just that, Summer scooted the stool closer.
This was serious.
âI thinkâ¦maybeâ¦possiblyâ¦I might beâ¦â Delia looked around, as if people were lurking in the nonexistent nooks and crannies of Summerâs home and trying to hear their conversation.
Apparently weird days were going around. âMight be what?â
âI think I might beâ¦â
âOh my God.â Summer clapped her hands over her mouth as it dawned on her, and then dropped them with a squeal. âYouâre pregnant!â
âShh,â Delia said, waving her hands in front of Summer.
âShh? Weâre inside.â
âYou left the door open, and sound carries around here.â Delia blew out a breath. âIâm not sure. I need to get a test, but itâsâ¦possible. I mean, we werenât trying, but there was a night whereââ
âLa-la-la, no details.â
Delia smiled at that, but it quickly melted into a groan. âOh shit, I donât know what to do. Do I wait it out? Do I get a test? Do I tell Caleb?â
âYou havenât told Caleb?â Summer screeched.
âNo, I havenât told Caleb. What if Iâm wrong? And we havenât talked about this at all. Andâ¦what if Iâm wrong?â
âThen, Iâm guessing, you try, try again.â
Delia groaned and flopped forward, her chest now resting on her knees. âIâm not prepared for this, Summer. Iâm still figuring out this whole âbeing someoneâs wifeâ thing Iâmâ¦so not ready.â
âYou know what part of that whole wife thing you seem to be missing?â
Delia glanced up. âWhat?â
âTalking to the other person, duh!â
Delia groaned again. âDonât duh me, little girl.â
âThen donât be stupid, Delia Shaw.â
Delia sat completely upright at that. âYou know I hate it when people accuse me of being stupid.â
âI do, but I also know youâre a big softy, and I am not afraid of you or your husband.â Summer reached across the distance between them, squeezing Deliaâs hand. âIt doesnât matter if you are or arenât. You still have to tell Caleb. You know that, or you wouldnât be here telling me. Youâd be hiding it or getting a test.â
âButâ¦â Delia swallowed, a nervous gesture so unlike her. âWhat if heâs disappointed?â she whispered, the apples of her cheeks going pink with a blush.
Delia was blushing. Summer couldnât help but smile. Sheâd always believed in love, especially the true, lasting kind that made people partners in life, the kind that shared hopes and dreams and children. Sheâd needed to believe that was possible in the utter absence of it.
So, she squeezed Deliaâs hand tighter. It was nice to be the sounding board for this. To be someoneâs friend. Someoneâsâ¦sister. âDisappointed by what?â she asked gently.
Delia shook her head, looking to the roof. âThat I am,â she mumbled. Then her head drooped. âOr if I turn out not to be.â
âHe loves you, Delia.â
âWell, I know that . Donât get all mushy Summer on me.â
âItâs not mushy. Itâs the bottom line. It doesnât matter which one disappoints him or which doesnât, because he loves you, and as with a lot of the bigger challenges you two have overcome, youâll figure out a way to navigate whatever this is.â
âI hate when youâre all smart and reasonable beyond your years.â
Summer grinned. âAnd yet here you are.â
âHere I am. Andâ¦thanks.â She squeezed Summerâs hand back and tried to tug it away, but Summer held on a little tighter.
These moments of feeling like she really did belong here, that sheâd built a forever-from-this-point family, were when she got so scared sheâd lose it all
