asked.
âNo one can guess what my painting is!â
âI know what it is, Monkeyface,â said Tugg, âand I think it is beautiful. But we should ask Violet her opinion. She is an artist too, remember.â
Teeny and Tugg had already thanked Violet for her âBest Friendsâ painting in the Animal Art Show.
âOf course,â said Teeny, âViolet will know right away.â
âPlease look at Teenyâs painting, Violet, and tell us if you recognize it,â said Tugg.
He winked at Violet. He winked again.
Violet saw Tugg winking. She saw the hopeful look in Teenyâs eyes.
She took a long look at the painting that was on Teenyâs easel.
Then Violet said tearfully, âMonkeyface, how can I ever thank you for this gorgeous portrait of, of⦠ME! â
Teenyâs Poem
Teeny and Tugg were enjoying the afternoon on their front porch.
âI finally finished my poem,â said Teeny, very pleased with herself.
Tugg put on his reading glasses.
He read the poem. It did not take long.
âShort and sweet, Monkeyface.â
âYes,â said the monkey. âGood poets get right to the point.â
âLetâs ask Violet what she thinks,â said Tugg. âWarthogs are poetry experts.â
âShe will love my poem,â said Teeny.
âViolet,â asked Tugg, âwhat do you think of this poem?â
The warthog burped, and then read the poem.
âWhere is the next page?â she asked.
Teeny wanted to cry.
Violet said, âBe thankful that it is not
your
poem, Teeny.â
âBut it IS my poem, Violet!â
âOops,â said Violet.
âHmm,â said Tugg. âHere is an idea.
Why not spend some time thinking about your poem, Monkeyface?â
So for three whole days, Teeny thought about her poem.
She climbed up a tree to gaze at the moon.
She sat at her desk with her notebook scribbling crossing off scribbling crossing off .
This was hard work that seemed to take forever.
On the fourth day, she shouted, âTuggboat! Now I really
am
finished.â
Throughout the jungle, the gorillaâs voice boomed.
âAttention, everyone! Come and hear Teeny read her new poem!â
Teeny was very nervous.
She read her new poem slowly.
Bees buzz,
birds sing
The jungle fell silent.
Teeny whispered to Tugg, âI took out the two the âs. Isnât it magical?â
Tugg was about to congratulate his little friend when suddenlyâ¦
The tiger roared, â Brilliant! â
The giraffe cried, â Fabulous! â
âCan we hear more? â begged the baboon.
Teeny blushed. âI was saving the best part for last.â
Bees buzz,
birds sing
warthogs burpâ¦
and gorillas glow.
Every animal started hooting and clapping wildly!
âAUTHOR! AUTHOR!â
âMonkeyface,â said Tugg, âyou are on your way to becoming a good writer.â
âThanks to you, Tuggboat,â Teeny said.
âWhat should I write about tomorrow?â asked Teeny.
âWrite about what you know best,â Tugg replied.
The monkey thought and thought.
Then she wrote down the title for her new poem, âWhat It Means To Have a Best Friend.â
