heâd want to be here. Ty says he knows the perfect place.â
âDown by the river?â Delaney asked.
âYes.â Monicaâs furrowed her brows. âHow did you know?â
âItâs where Tom used to take Ty fishing. They both loved to fish.â
Monica felt a surge of jealousy mixed with resentment that this near stranger knew more about her fatherâs life than she did.
âDo you ride?â Delaney asked.
âYou mean horses?â Monica replied.
âYeah,â Delaney grinned. âSorry, that partâs implied in rural Oklahoma.â
âNot really,â Monica confessed. âIâve been on one a few times, but itâs been years.â
âThat might present a bit of a problem,â Delaney said.
âWhyâs that?â
â âCause thereâs no other easy way to get to that spot. They always went out on horseback.â Delaney gave her another once-over and frowned. âYou at least got some jeans and boots?â
Monicaâs jaw dropped. She was wearing navy slacks and her customary heels. It hadnât even occurred to her that sheâd need more appropriate clothes. It wasnât that big of a deal when Bob had driven her around on the golf cart yesterday, but riding a horse was impossible in heels.
âI guess that means no,â Delaney remarked. âWhat size boot do you wear?â
âSeven and a half,â Monica said.
âIâm an eight. You can wear some thick socks. Looks like Iâve got you covered in that department. I probably have some jeans you can borrow too.â She eyed Monica with drawn brows. âWhat are you, about a six?â
âSix or eight, depending on the designer,â Monica said.
âThe only designer âround these parts is Wrangler. I still have a pair or two from my skinnier days that might fit you. I think youâll be a lot more comfortable out here in the right clothes.â
âYouâre probably right about that,â Monica said. âBut I hate to trouble you . . .â
âItâs no trouble at all,â Delaney reassured her. âMy place is only fifteen minutes down the road if youâd like to give them a try. Otherwise, the nearest place to buy anything is going to be an hour away.â
Monica chewed her lip. Although she hated to be indebted to Tyâs ex, she didnât have the time or inclination for shopping. She also didnât want to give Ty any excuse to leave her behind when he rode down to the river. âThanks, Delaney,â she replied with a smile. âI accept the offer.â
âWhat the devil?â Ty muttered under his breath. Gazing out Tomâs office window, he spotted Monica and Delaney looking like bosom buddies as they climbed into Delaneyâs gleaming-white Escalade. He watched gape-mouthed as, wheels spinning and kicking up a spray of loose gravel, lead-footed Delaney turned and pulled out of the drive, leaving a long trail of dust in her wake. He had no idea what they could be up toâbesides no good.
Shaking his head in bafflement, he turned back to Bob. âSo what youâre sayinâ is that I may have controlling interest of the hotel, but Monica still holds all the purse strings. What the hell good does that do me?â His prayer to finally have control of the hotel and a chance to fulfill his dream had been answered, but he still needed money.
âHow about investors?â Bob asked.
âTried that already,â Ty grunted.
âAnd?â Bob prompted.
âI found one. He came through with enough to buy Monica out, but not enough for the renovations.â Ty wasnât about to mention Delaneyâs insane proposal.
âTom also willed you the ranch, Tyrone.â
Ty blinked. âThe Circle B is mine?â
âIt took Monica by surprise too, not that she begrudges you. She said she has no interest in it and the ranch should rightfully
