celebrated as the returning Lords of Berinfell.â
âEven Autumn?â
âWell, weâll see how sheâs doing.â
âSo I may see her now?â
âItâs best you leave her be,â Nelly said.
âBut sheâs my sister!â
Nelly looked to Grimwarden, then back to Johnny. âRegarding that. We were afraid that something will come as a bit of a shock to you.â
âThat Iâm an Elf?â Johnny scratched his ear. âWell, Iâm kind of over that.â
âNo, not that,â said Nelly. âBut itâs related.â She looked to Grimwarden, sighing. âSee, Guardmaster, Iâm not much better at this. Okayââback to Johnnyââyou remember how we told you that the Drefids took you and the others as babes, yes?â
âSure.â
âWell, when they brought you and Autumn out of Allyra and left you on Earth, the authorities gave you to the Briarmans as brother and sister.â
âBut?â Johnnyâs sleepy mind didnât gather the implication.
âBut youâre not,â said Nelly. âNot by blood, anyway.â
Johnny sat back, eyes fixed in a blinkless stare.
âYour real name,â said Grimwarden, âis Albriand Ashheart. Autumn is Miarra Swiftstorm. Two families. Two lordly families.â
âWeâre very sorry to have to tell you like this,â Nelly said.
âDoes Autumn know?â
âYes, she knows.â
âI really canât see her?â
âNo, not now,â said Nelly. âShe needs time to . . . to come to terms with this in her own way. Thatâs why we didnât allow you to see her earlier. Youâll have to wait until the lordship ceremony.â
Grimwarden and Nelly bid Johnny good morning and left, letting the other boys back in. The four crawled back into bed, relishing the allowance of sleeping late. Everyone but Johnny, who, though quite exhausted, never did fall back asleep.

The Lordship Ceremony
âTHIS IS the coolest thing Iâve ever worn,â said Jett, admiring himself in a long mirror. âAnd thatâs saying a lot.â
âYou like the tunic, do you?â asked Brennath Eventide, a flet soldier assigned to help the young lords with their ceremonial attire. âI should say you might. The thread in these garments is worth more than the castle in which we now stand.â
âYur pulling me leg, arenât yu?â asked Jimmy, looking again at his tunic. Its design was the same as the others: black with ornate silver embroidery around the collar, sleeves, and waist. What thread could be worth that much gold? He turned and muttered to Tommy, âYu think heâd be offended if I told âim mine dunnot fit so well?â
âI doubt it,â said Tommy. âI think theyââ
âOffended?â Brennath laughed so hard his curly blond locks bounced on his shoulders. âYou could scarcely offend me . . . a lowly flet soldier! I am at your service . . . bound to your service, actually. And because I am to teach you the nuances of our culture, let me begin by explaining that each one of the Seven Lords is in all things above my station.â
Jimmy blushed. âUh . . . well, that will take some gettinâ used to. For most of me life, Iâve been rather second fiddle. Uh . . . more like tenth fiddle, really.â Jimmy stared at the floor. âThe tunicâs all right anyway.â
âItâs not all right if it isnât just the way you want it,â said Brennath. âCommand me, mâlord.â
âUh, well then, I suppose mine is a wee bit loose.â
âWell done, mâlord,â said Brennath. âYou will have to wear it for the ceremony, but I will have it altered before the council tomorrow afternoon.â
âThank yu,â said Jimmy, still red-cheeked. âIt is a great-looking tunic. And I do like the sword.â
