ShadowClan had always laid claim to the territory, and Firestar had finally granted it to them at the last Gathering to save further blood being spilled over a stretch of land that was too bare to offer good hunting.
âIt wasnât worth fighting over,â Stormfur commented. âFirestar was right to give it up.â
Dustpelt snorted. âThunderClan has never given up territory before!â
âNo,â agreed Brackenfur.
Spiderleg turned in an agitated circle, tail lashing, but Brackenfur went on. âHowever, the land was too exposed, and the Twolegs will be there soon, once itâs greenleaf.â
âAnd ThunderClan are more used to hunting in the forest,â Stormfur added.
âFirestar still shouldnât have given it up so easily,â Spiderleg insisted.
Lionkit watched nervously from his hiding place asSpiderleg glared at Stormfur. The long-limbed black warrior was more hotheaded than his father, Dustpelt. But Stormfur refused to be intimidated.
âWe gave up nothing but a piece of barren land that was too close to Twoleg territory!â he hissed.
âYou sound like Brambleclaw.â Dustpelt curled his lip. âHe only agreed with Firestarâs decision because any cat knows heâd rather face a pack of dogs than a Twoleg!â
Lionkitâs fur bristled with anger. His father wasnât scared of anything!
âBrambleclaw sided with Firestar because it was a wise decision, not because he was scared of Twolegs!â Stormfur retorted.
âWas it wise to stand before all the Clans and announce that ThunderClan can no longer defend its boundaries?â Spiderleg meowed hotly. âShadowClan have no right to set one mangy paw on ThunderClan land!â
âWell, itâs ShadowClan land now,â Stormfur concluded.
Spiderleg glared at him. âOf course, you donât care how much territory we give up,â he snarled. âYouâre not a ThunderClan cat!â
Lionkit flinched. Stormfur had fought off the invading ShadowClan warriors as fiercely as any cat. He watched closely, waiting to see how the gray warrior would react. But Stormfur only stared back at Spiderleg, his eyes wide with shock.
Brackenfur stepped between them, his eyes glintinganxiously in the moonlight. âIt doesnât matter if we disagree,â he meowed. âThe decision has been made.â
âBut now ShadowClan will think they can take whatever they want from us!â Spiderleg objected.
âFirestar made it clear that he was doing ShadowClan a favor when he let them take the land,â Brackenfur reminded him. âHe left no cat in any doubt that he was acting out of wisdom rather than weakness.â
âThen why did Onestar and Leopardstar look so interested?â Dustpelt snapped. âIt was obvious they thought ThunderClan couldnât defend their territory.â
âWhat if WindClan decide they want a piece of the forest on the other side?â Spiderleg chipped in. âOnestar hasnât exactly been a friend of ours since he became leader.â
âHeâs been okay since he helped us with the badger attack,â Brackenfur pointed out.
âBut heâs still going to be looking out for his Clan,â Dustpelt argued. âIf he thinks weâre weak he might see a chance to expand his territory.â
âCan you imagine Firestar giving up any prey-rich part of our territory?â Stormfur asked.
Dustpelt glared at him for a moment, then dipped his head. âNo,â he conceded.
âAnd we donât have to worry about RiverClan,â Brackenfur pressed. âWe share no boundaries with them, and Leopardstarâs been pretty quiet since Hawkfrost died on our territory.â
âDoes any cat really know what happened to Hawkfrost?â Stormfur asked.
âOnly that Firestar found his body while he was on patrol with Brambleclaw and Ashfur,â Spiderleg meowed.
