head.
Amanda looked over the rest of the letter; there were more inane instructions about what not to touch and where not to look and then some legalities and the name and address of Williamâs lawyer. She put down the letter and sat back against her chair, wrapping her hands around her mug of tea. She eyed her sisters, chatting about their fatherâs eccentricities as though this were a common occurrence, three sisters having tea, talking.
A comraderie was developing among them. If anything, this crazy letter and the terms of the will was making new relationships possible. And for that Amanda was grateful.
Suddenly a cry came from Amandaâs bedroom, and Olivia and Ivy jumped up.
âI hope we didnât wake him,â Ivy said.
âNo,â Amanda responded with a smile. âItâs time for him to wake up. She headed inside the bedroom to bring Tommy out to meet his aunts, lest they make excuses about having to be somewhere and run out the door.
âAwww,â Olivia said, her features softening at the sight of the baby. âHeâs so beautiful.â
âJust perfect,â Ivy cooed, trailing a gentle finger along his cheek.
âWell, Iâd better get going,â Olivia said, taking her coat from the hall closet. âI have crazy deadlines and my publisher is sending me to Paris for a fashion show next week. Iâll be gone for almost a month.â
The entire time Iâll be tested in the brownstone, Amanda thought, surprised by her disappointment. So much for developing a relationship.
âHey, Iâm going away for a few weeks too,â Ivy said, smiling. âDeclan and I are going to Ireland, where his parents still live, to visit his friends and relatives who wonât be able to come here for the wedding. Iâm so excited!â But a cloud passed over Ivyâs expression. âI just wish our father had liked himâapproved of him,â Ivy said. âAt least before there was time to try to change his mind, but now ... â
âThe most important thing is how you feel,â Amanda told Ivy.
âThatâs right,â Olivia said, pulling her black knit hat over her hair. âAnd remember something. No one was good enough for William. Not even his own daughters.â
âThatâs harsh, but unfortunately very true,â Ivy said, slipping on her coat.
Amanda nodded. âWell, maybe these envelopes and their contents will shed some light on the mysterious William Sedgwick, the father we barely knew.â
Olivia and Ivy nodded. There was little left to say on the subject.
âWell, good luck with your move to the brownstone,â Ivy said to Amanda. âI still donât like that bit about someone watching you, but perhaps itâs just a ruse to deter you from not following his instructions.â
âIâm sure itâs exactly that,â Olivia added. âI mean, itâs not like he could have hired someone to spy on you from inside the house.â
âThatâs true,â Amanda said, feeling a bit better about that part of the letter. âAnyway, I havenât decided that Iâm going to go through with this bizarre thing,â Amanda said. âI donât know that I even want our fatherâs brownstone. I never spent a single day in his home. Iâm not sure Iâd be comfortable inheriting it when heâs gone. It has no meaning to me whatsoever.â
âMaybe heâs trying to change that,â Ivy offered.
âFrom the grave,â Olivia added.
Amanda shrugged. âI guess I need to give this all some thought.â
Olivia nodded. âWell, if you do decide to fulfill the terms of the letter, Iâd keep that piece of paper with you at all timesâyou donât want to forget any of the instructions about what rooms you are and arenât allowed to go in.â
âWho knowsâmaybe there are trip wires or hidden cameras or
